SLIVKO
I try to hide my limp from Delilah as she hikes through the jungle brush, smacking vines out of her way as she goes.
"Wait up," I call after her. "You're making me dizzy. I feel like we've been going round in circles."
"We have not" she says, whipping around to face me. "Besides, we've gotta find the others. They've gotta be around here somewhere."
I bend over, and then sit on the ground, trying to stretch the leg that had been caught in between the pilot seats.
"I can't believe this," she says, for the millionth time. "Of all the people on that dumb boat, I get stuck with you."
"Gee, thanks," I wince, more from the pain of my leg, than her remark. I'm kinda getting used to her complaining, I think it's how she expresses affection.
Finally getting out of her head, Lilah notices me grimacing as I try to rub the pain away. "Hey." She kneels over by me carefully, dropping the sack of supplies we'd scavenged from the chopper wreck.
"Is it really bad?" Her voice is softer than usual, and it catches me off guard. I can't help but grin at her sudden warmth.
"Nah, just a little sore," I admit. Lilah catches me smiling at her, and as quick as her softness came, it disappears.
"Try to toughen up, soldier."
I roll my eyes.
Lilah stands up, slinging the sack back over her shoulder. "We've gotta try to find the others. Or at least a place to crash for the night. It's probably gonna be dark soon."
I force myself to my feet, and strap my pack back on, slinging my firearm over my shoulder.
Lilah had insisted on wielding the machete, so I trudge along behind her once more as she continues to smack through the jungle vines.
"Having fun with that?"
"Don't make fun of me," she snaps. "This thing's pretty handy, and someone's got to lead the way." Lilah turns around to sneer at me, and just as she does, a giant vine comes crashing through the trees. It pierces the mud beside her and she screams, stumbling back into the leaves.
I'm about to laugh at her when another vine comes crashing down, and suddenly, the whole canopy is swaying. We look up to see a giant ant-like creature snapping its pincers.
Lilah is scrambling to her feet. I bolt towards her, pulling her away just in time before another one of the ant's long, sharp legs stabs at the ground where'd she'd just been.
The mud splatters and squelches behind us like blood as we dash through the jungle, narrowly avoiding the gigantic ant's quick pursuit.
I hadn't even realized Lilah was still holding my hand until she's yanked away from me.
