Jeder hat bestimmt schon Mal etwas von dem Begriff "Cultural Appropriation" gehört und heute würde ich gerne meine Meinung zu diesem Thema teilen.
Für alle, die nicht wissen, was das bedeutet: So wird es bezeichnet, wenn Leute aus einer anderen Kultur Traditionen, meist Kleidung, Frisuren oder Schmuck, übernehmen oder in diesem Fall tragen. Das passiert meist ohne Wissen, weshalb oder woher diese stammt.
Da Braids wahrscheinlich das geläufigste sind, werde ich mich in diesem Kapitel darauf beziehen, vor allem, da sie in den letzten Jahren vermehrt getragen werden.

Ich habe damit kein Problem, wenn eine weiße/asiatische/whatever Person Braids trägt, ich meine, das ist eine Frisur, die viele schön finden, wieso solle man es also jemanden verbieten, nur weil er nicht die "richtigen" Wurzeln dafür hat?

Das Problem beginnt dann aber meist, dass die Personen nicht wissen, woher dies stammt. Lasst es mich so sagen: Cornrows wurden nicht von den Kardashians erfunden, die gab es schon seit Jahrhunderten. Wenn Schwarze sie getragen haben, wurden sie aber als "Ghetto" abgestempelt. Sobald Kylie Jenner die getragen hat, war es auf einmal "High Fashion".

Das habe ich persönlich auch so erlebt. Jedes Mal, wenn ich früher Braids getragen habe, haben mich Leute schief angesehen, jetzt ist es aber weit verbreitet. Kann natürlich auch sein, dass man es mittlerweile einfach häufiger sieht, ich denke mal, der ersten Person mit blauen Haaren ging es ähnlich, heute ist es nichts besonderes mehr.

Aber es hinterlässt trotzdem einen seltsamen Nachgeschmack, wenn man sich das vor Augen führt, vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, dass Schwarze deswegen immer noch diskriminiert werden und diese Frisuren in manchen Berufen nicht tragen dürfen. Wenn dann noch gesagt wird "White girls wear it better" ist dann auch eine gewisse Grenze erreicht.

Um einen einfachen Vergleich herzustellen: Stellt euch vor ihr arbeitet an einem Projekt, eure Idee wird aber nicht ernst genommen. Dann kommt eine andere Person, macht genau das gleiche und alle applaudieren.

Andererseits finde ich auch nicht, dass einzelne Personen dafür verantwortlich gemacht werden können, dafür liegen die ganzen negativen Assoziationen zu weit in der Vergangenheit.
Außerdem gibt es ja auch viele, die sich darüber informieren und ich finde, dann ist es völlig legitim, Braids oder Cornrows zu tragen.

Wie findet ihr Cultural Appropriation? Verständlich oder überbewertet?

Everbody has probably heard of the term "cultural appropriation" and I'd like to share my opinion on that topic.

For everybody who doesn't know what it stands for: It's a term used for people that use/wear other culture's traditions, mostly clothes, hairstyles and accessories. That usually happens without any background knowledge about the history of said traditions. Since braids are one of the most known things and became a pretty common hairstyle, I'm gonna focus on that part. 

I don't have an issue if a white/asian/whatever person wears braids, I mean it's a hairstyle which a lot of people like, so why forbid other people to wear it just because they don't have the "right roots"?

The problem starts however if these people don't know where the hairstyle comes from. Let me tell you: Cornrows weren't invented by the Kardashians, in fact, they have been existing for centuries. If a black person wore them it was considered "ghetto" but as soon as Kylie Jenner shows up with that hairstyle, it is considered "high fashion".

I personally experienced the same thing. Whenever I had braids people looked at me funnily, but nowadays it is common. Could obviously be because you see it more often, I think the first person to dye their hair blue had the same issue.

But it still leaves a bitter taste if you look at this way, especially since black people are still being discriminated for wearing braids and are not allowed to wear them in certain jobs. And when people say "white girls wear it better" it kinda has reached a limit.

To show a comparison: Imagine you work on a project but your idea isn't being taken seriously. Suddenly another person does the exact same thing and everybody applauds them.

However, I don't think that specific people can be blamed for this since the majority of the problem lays in the past. Additionally, there are many people who do inform themselves and know about the history before wearing braides.

What is your opinion on cultural appropriation? Understanding or overrated?
