I got up, stretching and moaning as I felt the sun on my face. My bedsheets and pillow were already warm from the bright sunlight coming through. I sat up and could faintly hear someone in the kitchen downstairs.
I got up and started getting ready. I slipped on whatever dress I could find. I combed through my hair and went downstairs. I could smell breakfast being cooked.
"Goodmorning, Aria," Bash greeted. "You just missed Gilbert."
"That's fine," I said. "Goodmorning to you too. What have you made for us this morning?"
"Eggs, lots of eggs," Bash replied. "I made some sausage. There's some on your plate."
I squeezed Bash's arm. "Thank you. Where's my plate?"
"Same spot you sat in last night," Bash replied.
I smiled in Bash's general direction. "Thank you. It smells delicious. I can't compliment the looks but I'm sure it looks great."
"I'll take the compliment," Bash said. "Please, sit down. The eggs are ready."
I found my spot and sat down. I heard Bash put some eggs on my plate and I started eating. Bash sat down with me and started up a conversation.
"What was school like in Toronto?" Bash asked, his mouth full. "It must have been very different than the school here."
I poked at my food. "We had a schedule that we had to follow every day. We had to get up at six-thirty in the morning and be downstairs for breakfast by seven. After that, we had classes from eight-thirty to three-thirty with lunch from twelve-thirty to one. After that, we studied and had free time. Dinner was from five-thirty to six. We had free time until bedtime at nine-thirty. I liked it a lot. I made a lot of friends. I actually learned two languages."
"Which languages?" Bash asked.
"French and Xhosa," I replied.
"Xhosa?" Bash asked.
"Yeah," I replied. "It's a language spoken in some parts of Africa."
"How did you learn it?" Bash asked. "You are as pasty as your brother."
I laughed, covering my mouth. I had to swallow before I answered. "I am. I made a friend with a woman from South Africa who taught me. She was there the entire time I spent at that blind school. She was like the mother I never had."
"Gilbert told me what happened," Bash said. "I am so sorry that happened to you it must have been hard."
I nodded. "Thank you a lot. Since I'm Gilbert's twin, I don't remember my mom. She died after giving birth to Gilbert. I'm the oldest by five minutes, by the way. It was another seven years before I had my accident that caused my vision loss. I was sent to the blind school not long after that."
"What happened?" Bash asked.
"I hit my head pretty hard," I replied as I took a bite. "I was going down a hill on a sled and ran into a tree. The force of the blow caused me to lose all my sight. I've been doing pretty good so far. I need to teach how to set up my plate though. There's a certain way that I've been doing it."
"Anything for you, my angel."
I blushed and smiled at my plate. We talked for a bit longer before cleaning up. I helped and went upstairs. I was making sure everything was in its place when there was a soft knock on the door.
"Aria?"
I turned in the direction of Bash's voice. "Yes?"
"I noticed there was a damaged fence," Bash answered. "Can you help me?"
