Breathless (Sad)

Eren walked slowly listening to the chirps of birds in the trees, the sound of feet hitting the ground, of children laughing, and men screaming. The birds melancholy tune matched that of his heart and his feet kept moving even though he wishes they had stopped long ago. The laughter of the children was a memory long ago, the screaming how ever was barely a month or so. His feet wandered as did his mind. He wanted to go somewhere, anywhere that wasn't here. Yet his soul had dragged him to the creaky black gate where he could already see the freshly dug plot where his best friend lay 6 feet under. The sight made him tremble. Still his feet moved forward. They kept going until he was face to face with the slab of stone that materialized the death of Armin Arlert. He tried his very best to keep his tears in knowing that Armin wouldn't want him to cry. The sight of the tomb and the thought of him laying under the ground breathless was too much. Years of hidden love, suppressed feelings, and bottled grief boiled over the edge of his heart and out of the corner of his eyes, leaving stains where the tears had passed
"God damn it Armin! You promised! Y-You promised me! You said we would see the ocean! That we'd do it t-together! You promised me you wouldn't die! Y-You lied! Armin you lied to me! And I-I believed it. This is all my fault. Armin you trusted me so much, always knew I'd be there to catch you when you fall. I-I let you down. Where the hell was I when you let yourself die! Let yourself be burned to a crisp! How could I not stop you?! How could I?! God Armin it should be me down there not you. I never got the chanc- I never had the courage to tell you. I-I love you Armin. I always have! Since we were kids. I love the wonder in your eyes, the hope in your smile, your kindness and way with words. I love you Armin. And I let you die without ever knowing it! I-I'm sorry."
he sobbed so hard and painfully that it left him nearly as breathless as the corpse he had confessed his love to.
