 The Hunter & The Prey

In that moment, there were two things of which Tori was certain. The first was that Kakashi had taken her for a fool if he thought that she would not recognize him beneath that idiotic disguise. The second was that Kakashi was not aware that she had caught on to this disguise - a fact which put her at a heightened advantage over the Copy-Cat Ninja.

Tori pursed her lips and leaned forward. "What did you say your name was again?"

The brunette male grinned at her. "Sukea, but call me whatever you'd like."

She hummed in response, taking in his relaxed posture as he leaned against the building. The motors were whirring in her brain as she processed the situation.

A distant memory drifted into her mind, of a game the two of them had played when they were younger: The Hunter & The Prey. Being the milder and more insecure of the two, she had always been stuck as playing the part of the prey. The victim.

Not today, she thought, biting the insides of her cheeks to keep from laughing. Today, I think I'll change it up. She blew a long breath through her lips, settling a frown onto her face.

"Look, Sukea," her voice was apologetic, a bashful expression passing over her features. "I'm sure you're a really nice guy, I'm just afraid you're a bit too late."

At this, his head tilted. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, I'm already seeing someone," she replied. "And we're getting pretty serious." Sukea (Kakashi) scrunched his eyebrows, lips poised to speak, but Tori was already turning away, fingers raised in a half-hearted wave. "I'm sure you'll find someone else though!" And in less than a second, she had disappeared, leaving Sukea standing bewildered in the hectic Konoha street.

*~*~*

Tori pressed a hand to her face, having finally found refuge in her apartment. She leaned against the door and sighed. Night was settling over the village, but she remained planted in her living room, watching as her apartment sunk into darkness. Her mind was spinning, trying to process the events of the day. To make sense of them. Her eyes closed, fishing images from her memory.

The look in his eye. Ultimately, it was that look, aloof yet calculative, which had given him away. Tori had spent years staring into those eyes, trying to figure out what exactly lay beneath them. And as they were the only feature exposed on his face, she had grown quite familiar with Kakashi's eyes. Even with his Sharingan and scar concealed, she had recognized them right away. So, what was he trying to achieve?

Tori pulled her lower lip between her teeth, chewing as she contemplated.

She and Kakashi had a unique relationship, one that surpassed mere friendship or acquaintanceship. Kakashi had been part of her life much longer than he had been absent in it, since she was at least four, when his father had taken her in. The two of them were practically raised side by side.

Yet despite all of those years of closeness, she still could not read the elusive Hatake. Tori blew out a frustrated breath of air, the sound coming out as a low hiss in the empty apartment. The start of a migraine was building at her temples.

She didn't know what to make of Kakashi's actions today - why he had disguised himself as "Sukea" and introduced himself to her. More than likely, he was plotting something. A prank, a surprise party, she didn't know.
