The ride to Gravity Falls was, for the most part, uneventful. The landscape had become a blur, rolling plains and fields full of corn blending together.
Gideon Pines stared outside his car window. This was his first summer away from home, and if his summer was anything like this car ride, he would be bored to death for three months straight.
"You're quiet," Gideon's cousin remarked. Pacifica Southeast, the bright and overly optomistic cousin, had come along with a family friend to pick up Gideon.
"I'm preparing to be bored," Gideon informed.
"I don't think you'll be bored," the driver of the car said. "But not that much goes on."
Gideon gave Pacifica a look; there hadn't been much time for introductions (Pacifica had practically dragged him into the car), so he didn't know anything about the Southeasts' family friend.
"Oh, right, you don't have any idea who -" Pacifica stopped herself and laughed. "This is our family friend, the owner of my parents' business."
"Call me Ford." The driver glanced at Gideon in his mirror and gave him a wink. "There's more to what meets the eye in Gravity Falls."
Gideon certainly hoped so.
Gideon felt someone poking him and he wearily opened his eyes. Had he been asleep? He didn't remember closing his eyes . . .
Pacifica pointed out Gideon's window. "We're here!"
The car drove past a sign that read, Welcome to Gravity Falls!
Gideon felt excitement bubble up inside him. He was here. In Gravity Falls.
As the car slowed down in front of a traffic light, Gideon glanced outside his window again. A giant ice-blue flyer stared back at him; in decorative letters, the flyer read:
Come and see . . .
the MYSTERY TWINS
Tent of Telepathy
Mon - Wed - Fri
7 o'clock P.M.
"Who are the Mystery Twins?" Gideon asked.
"Couple of dumb psychics," Ford growled.
"I've always wanted to see a show, but Uncle Ford and my parents won't let me," Pacifica sighed.
"They're not worth it, Paz," Ford warned.
Pacifica's eye twitched in irritation when she heard Ford call her 'Paz'. Gideon switched the subject immediately.
"Do you think you would ever take us?" he inquired.
"Absolutely not. Not unless my journals start popping up out of nowhere." The traffic light switched to green, and the car was on its way once again.
Pacifica leaned over to Gideon. "He lost his journals years ago, and it's his way of saying it won't ever happen."
Dang. And just when he had been getting curious about these twins, too.
He settled back into his seat and watched the town outside pass in a blur.
