I was seated beside Bennett.

Which is not necessary a bad thing. After all, he can easily hand a piece of gum to me without the teacher knowing. But that means another semester of Bennett Layne's teasing and pranks. I mean, he's not a bully, he's just weird. But I never told him that. Papa would give me a spanking by Mr. Pow Pow. (Our dreaded canoe paddle hidden in the hall closet.)
I nudged him. He instinctively handed me a piece of gum. But I felt something else...paper. I opened the folded sheet. I instantly recognized Bennett's sloppy scribble.

Our? 4 Scware? Resess? And he forgot a question mark. Bennett is so dumb. I bet he never even took Pre-K. But I wouldn't say it, because that would be mean. I wrote in my best handwriting,

He stuck his tongue at me. I stuck mine out back. Ms. Rivers gave us both a color change for disrupting the class. I'll get Bennett back for that.
