- sad smiles

The saddest smiles always came from the clowns.

Twisted smiles,
tears filling my eyes.

He grins at me with a feverish look,
tears striking his face as he spins me around in my chair.

Restrained to the chair,
I'm unable to move.

Done up in a polka dot dress,
itching paint on my skin,
and a circus ring surrounding me,
I realize where I am.

Puddles is smiling and crying at me.

"Can't you feel it, Penny?
The circus is back in town!"

I can feel tears rising in my cheeks
and falling down my face.

His grin only grows as he spins around with me.

I feel something drip onto my face,
it slowly slips down my cheek.

Looking up,
I see shoes.

Shoes, legs, a torso, arms,
a body swinging from the ariel
dancer ropes.

"Isn't it beautiful, Ronny?
And she's a pretty clown, isn't she?"

I can feel my sobs choking up in my throat.

Smile,
Penny,
clowns are supposed to smile.

And smile I do.
