1st December 2016

Frenkie and Y/N had known each other forever; from playing football in the streets with friends to scoring in the Johann-Cruyff-Arena in front of fifty thousand fans, she had always been by his side.

They were best friends and had never thought of being something else, of being more. Anytime someone told them they'd end up as a couple, they'd just casually laugh it off and pay it no attention.

After all, they had grown up together and by now knew the other better than they knew themselves. 'From friends to lovers' - that's just something that happens in romantic novels, fan fictions and things like that, isn't it?

The thought of one day waking up and realizing you were in love was nothing short of ridiculous to Y/N. She was sure that her feelings for Frenkie were never going to shift or change in any way, but she never took into consideration that she might have confused friendship with love from the start.

"Do I really have to go?" Y/N asked with a hint of hope audible in her voice, but it just caused her best friend to roll his eyes in return. "Yes, you do."

The smile on Frenkie's lips slowly turned into a grin as she slightly shoved his shoulder, trying to remain serious, but eventually laughing along with him. "I don't want to go."

"Come on, Y/N. You don't want to force me to go on my own, do you?" He replied and looked right into her y/e/c eyes, knowing that this was what would convince her to come along to the celebration his team, Ajax Amsterdam, was hosting today.

He had always taken her along to these kind of parties and he surely wanted it to stay that way. Otherwise, he'd just be bored and waiting for the whole event to end.

Frowning, Y/N crossed her arms in front of her chest before sighing deeply. "You're an idiot."

"But you'll come along, right?"

"You won't leave me in peace until I say yes, will you?"

"Exactly."

"...Okay."

"Thank you," Frenkie exclaimed after she had finally given in and threw his arms around her in a quick hug, "I know it'll be great."

Two hours later Y/N found herself waiting for Frenkie in front of the huge restaurant the party was going to take place in. She was wearing her favorite dress, feeling comfortable and confident for the first time in a while. The thought crept up to her that maybe tonight wouldn't be as bad as she had presumed.

"Hey there," Frenkie suddenly greeted Y/N, making her jump slightly, but she immediately relaxed as she saw that it was him, "Sorry for being late."

Shrugging her shoulders, she turned around to face him with a smile before gesturing for him to go into the restaurant first. It seemed like the two of them were the last ones to arrive because everyone was staring at them as they quickly made their way towards the reserved table.

Normally, Y/N would have felt awkward in a situation like that, but being with her best friend always eased her mind in ways she couldn't explain.

After they had found their seats among Frenkie's teammates and their families, the team's president rose to greet everyone with a speech. The formal part of the evening, including some more speeches and a lot of food, was over sooner than Y/N had expected.

Soon, the lights were dimmed, the music turned up and the guests started to dance or chat loudly in small groups. Y/N wasn't a fan of dancing and neither did she like socializing that much, so she just stayed seated next to her best friend who was engaged in a conversation by now and watched the people around her.
