The Monkees were astonished at the demographics of the crowd coming to see them. They expected to see people who had been in middle school in the sixties, and maybe their parents if they were still mobile enough to make it to a rock concert. These were the folks who would attend an oldies concert. The opening acts for the Monkees included other Sixties phenom performers Herman's Hermits (minus Peter Noone), Gary Pucket & the Union Gap, and the Grass Roots. Surprisingly though, large swaths of the crowd consisted of teenagers who came on their own, without their parents or guardians, donning their Monkees 20th anniversary concert t-shirts with the faces of their favorite Monkee (Davy commanded the most square inches of breast space, followed by Peter, whose t-shirt had a photo of him from when he was a young man, as opposed to Micky, whose relatively unpopular t-shirt depicted him as his forty-two year-old self).
