~Nick's POV~
"This isn't going to work out...you can't be content with living like this, can you?"
"Nick, I am totally committed to this relationship, I told you! I don't care about what other mammals think about us. I mean... that moment when we held hands on the way back to work from our break was a bit risky I admit, and it was annoying to keep breaking apart whenever a pedestrian were to even look in our direction BUT, I'll prove that I- we - can do this and it's going to work out, as long as we do it together."
"No... I mean the space in your apartment!"
At the moment, me and Judy are cuddling on her bed, also, her only piece of furniture. We're both sat up and I'm leaning against the wall with my arms around Judy as she leans against me. It's in moments like these when I realise how small and fragile she actually is. For a short while afterwards, Judy scrolls on her smartphone while I play a small game with myself where I push Judy's ears down flat and then count how long it will take for her to unconsciously spring them back up again. I could do this for hours. Since our non-accepting work environment has restricted us from being ourselves around each other, we felt deprived. So we decided to go back to Judy's place straight after, for some private time. Although her 'place' is so tiny, I'm surprised my claustrophobia hasn't kicked in yet.
"Judy...the walls...they're closing in..."
She rolls her eyes. "Trust you to be melodramatic every five seconds."
"You didn't have to spend your money on giving me a house, when you could have just added it to your savings to get out of here... You know, have something better." I reply. "I could have accumulated enough sooner or later on my own." I shrug.
"Nick, you were literally living in a box. This place may be pretty crap, but, at least I have a roof over my head... You didn't."
"Yeah yeah alright Mother Teresa...no need to rub it in." I say, smiling. Her ears spring back up again and the fur on each one brushes the sides of my snout which tickles, making me chuckle.
"It doesn't take a lot to amuse you does it?" She says.
"Well I find you very amusing, Carrots." My mind wonders back to the previous conversation. "You know...if you're finding it hard to get by here, then..." I tug at my collar nervously, trying to find a way to get the words out. "we could always...maybe... think about-"
*phone rings*
"No..." Judy groans after seeing the name that must have displayed on her screen. "Why her..."
"What's the prob?"
"Uh, give me a second, just let me take this."
Judy seems to be in a mild state of panic and suddenly rushes out of the room to 'take the call'. I blink in the silence of being abruptly left alone and feel just a tad bit dejected.
Wait. I was wrong, there isn't silence. Confused, I press my ear against the wall to my right, finding out the source to all of this muffled noise. There seems to be two guys playing a video game of some sort, and according to the murmured conversation between the two, one of them is horribly losing... I cringe. Are the walls that thin?
I have a small sigh of relief from the fact that I didn't decide to ask Judy the list of 'intimate' questions I had initially prepared...
All of a sudden, the door swings open again and Judy comes back in. "Someone's using the shared bathroom so I can't go in it..." She says, clutching her phone and looking desperate.
"Why do you have to talk in there? What's so private about this call that you can't tell me about? You didn't even say who phoned."
"Okay, okay." She sighs. "It's my sister. A while back, I needed some advice. And no matter how close I am to my sister, I can't..." She becomes aware of her surroundings and lowers her voice. "I can't tell her that I'm in love with a fox..." She tries hard not to look at me after saying that. I suppress any pain before it rises. "I-I didn't know how she'd take it. So I lied, saying I liked some new guy at the ZPD."
