Prologue - Five

It was 1989. The year that Five had gone missing. He was assigned "Number Five" in the orphanage, he never had a real name, and it seemed to fit him well. The orphanage wanted to give all adoptive parents their complete creative freedom. That's what they said, and everyone believed it. The truth was that the orphanage was abusive. They didn't care for the children whatsoever. They gave the children 2 meals a day. After their first meal of the day, which was a bowl of stale cereal and a plastic spoon, they would send the children straight upstairs to study their books. They would then be called down to their second meal, they were then sent straight to bed. Five lived like this for years upon years, since he was three in 1979. He became incredibly witty, and smart, even smarter than the kids who had been in the orphanage from when they were born until they were fourteen years old. He was adopted by a family when he was ten years old, in 1986. There was one special book that he stole from the orphanage. His family was boring and ordinary, unlike him.
