Veronica was twelve when her neighbors moved out. Just a couple of months after that she saw her new neighbors move in. There were two parents and two boys. One looked around the age of ten and the other seemed twelve as well. She didn't know how to approach the boy. He was short, around 5'3, he was skinny, had dark hair that swept to the side, dimples, and green eyes. He didn't seem like he smiled that much. She was watching from the window when suddenly the boy stopped walking into the house. He whipped his head to the side to see Veronica watching him. She freaked out and fumbled with her curtains, desperately trying to close them. She finally closed her curtains and leaned against her wall. She trembled. After that day Veronica didn't once think about talking to her neighbor.

A year after her new neighbors moved in her parents started to get into fights, sometimes they didn't end for days straight and one of her parents would sleep in a different bed. They would scream and sometimes even physically fight. Her dad had even left for a few days once. One day Veronica was in the attic and she found two pairs of beautiful white ice skates. It was February and the lake had frozen over. She took her skates and ran past the room where her parents were fighting and out the front door. She ran to the lake where families usually fished together. She laced up the ice skates and stepped onto the ice. The ice was firm and slick. Her feet just seemed to glide naturally across the ice. This was her way to escape from all the chaos at her house. To her, the house didn't seem like home any longer.
