Chapter 2

If you were given the chance to know when you were going to die, would you want to know? You wouldn’t. And trust me when I saw that I didn’t want to know when you croaked either, but hey, we can’t get everything we wanted now can we? I wouldn’t (get everything I want), and I didn’t either.

So, where were we? Oh yeah, I fainted. Accordingly this brings us to lesson number two from my story – lesson number one was don’t go out in a storm to rescue a cat- ‘if you have to faint during a panic attack, don’t do it on a pavement.’ It hurts like hell. When I awoke in the infirmary of Trinity high, the first thing I felt was the head ache, then the back pain, and then my pinkie toe.

“Don’t move around so much, sweetheart.” The school nurse told me. I nodded.

“How long was I out?” I asked her.

“Not long. You fell in front of the school about half an hour ago.” She said. I was confused for a while, until I saw her own little clock on top of her head. Damn, she was going to die old, seriously old.

“Oh.” I said, “Can I leave?” I asked. She was reading something on a paper.

“If you’re feeling better, I guess you can. But I just have to ask you a few questions, ok? What did you have for breakfast this morning?” She asked. I thought back.

“Waffles, bacon and eggs on French toast and a glass of grapefruit juice – for vitamin c- some chocolate milk for calcium and pancakes with chocolate syrup, some fried plantains, cherries flavoured liquorice, Cheerio’s and Luck Charms mixed cereal… oh, and some grapes.” I told her remembering that my dad did not to make me breakfast for me so I didn’t get to eat as usual. Now that I think about it, I did eat a tad bit more than usual, only a tad though. She stared at me wide eyed.

“You ate all of that? This morning?” she asked. I nodded.

“Yeah, I used to be really… active before I moved here, so my diet was… assorted.” I told her She stayed staring at me like a bug eyed fly.  “Can I leave now?” She nodded.

“Yes, you can. Here’s your schedule, the secretary took the liberty to send it for you.” She told me. I nodded, took the papers then left the infirmary.

Trinity Cross High was big; really big. My first class was calculus, and then art. Seeing as I had already missed about 45 minutes, I logically thought that it made no sense that I go to that class. So, I followed the school map and went to the art room humming ‘I’m the map, I’m the map, I’m the map, I’m the map, I’m the Map!’ from Dora the Explorer.  Since we all know my luck has always been magnificent, I walked until the bell rang for the beginning of second period before I could go into the general direction of the art room.

“Hello?” I called when I opened the door to the room. There were fifteen students and one female teacher.

“Hi, you must be… Berry?” she asked. I nodded.

“Yip.” I told her, then some girl snickered and I heard her say to her friend, ‘What sort of crappy name is Berry.’ It took everything in me not to smash her face in at that moment, but considering the bull that she had caused later down, I should have just smacked that bitch, but I’m getting ahead of myself, so like I said, I didn’t do anything. I took a deep breath and sat in the back.

“Self-control, Berry,” I mumbled to myself, “Self-control is key.” Class went by easily, except for the fact that I wanted to snap Blondie’s neck, but that’s normal. I thought everything was going to be alright and that maybe it was all just post-traumatic stress of being struck by lightning. Just goes to show you, I shouldn’t be thinking.

I had walked into the cafeteria with my stomach threatening to do stuff to me. I walked to the line behind some guys and was comfortably waiting my turn when someone pushed up against me. I spun around feeling dizzy and annoyed as hell.

“What the hell!” I cried out. Then I noticed something weird. Not weird like the numbers that everyone in the cafeteria had hovering over their heads. No, it was that the guy, who I was now staring at, in a possible psycho stalker way watching his every move, didn’t have any.

“Problem?” he asked glaring down at me. And I just kept staring.

“She’s star struck,” I heard another voice say, but I ignored it and kept on staring at the guy. My face was changing from one of complete shock to horror within minutes. I mean, honestly, I’m irresponsible, rash and somewhat aggressive, yes, but I’m not an idiot. I watch movies, and I read books – when forced- I know this scene, and since I might not be the main character, here, I’m not going to act like an idiot and confront some random guy who might know what was happening to me, without risking looking like a mental case. So, instead, I diverted my attention to the friend and glared.

“What.” I said.

“Deaf too?” he replied laughing with his friends. “It’s ok, cutie, we don’t mind another fan. Especially one as cute as you.” Most of the cafeteria was looking in our direction by now. I rolled my eyes at the guy.

“If only your little friend was as big as your ego, girls wouldn’t think you’re a lesbian.” I said, shaking my head and turning back to the cafeteria woman.

“What did you say?” he growled, calling me a bad name at the end causing me to roll my eyes again. Then he grabbed my shoulder turning me to face him. I glared at his face. He might have had a long timeline, but if he kept this up, I was going to shorten it personally. As I thought this the clock started to blur around, but I didn’t notice this since he had pulled me towards him causing in me I punched him in the face.

“Speak to me like that again and I will burn you.” I hissed turning back to the lunch lady and taking my pizza and coke –healthy, I know. I was turning around when he grabbed my hands. Everything happened in slow motion then, actually, it was more like one solid matrix move. The coke fell, spilling all over the floor, I kicked the guy in the shin then grabbed him by his short blonde hair strands pulling him down to my level while flinging the pizza off of the platter, and then using the hard plastic tray as a weapon, I slammed it into his head about five times before Liam stopped me.

“Berry.” He shouted looking into my rage filled eyes. I closed them knowing what I would see if I looked at him. I didn’t want to go through loosing someone I loved again. “Are you, ok?” I nodded.

“Yeah, I’m good.” I told him.

“Walk it off?” he asked me. I nodded and turned to leave, but then turned back when I remembered the idiot who pissed me off in the first place. I grabbed his head, bringing him down to meet my five foot three frame.

“Piss me off again, and you wouldn’t be so lucky.” I hissed at him, and then I shoved him away.

“You owe me lunch!” I shouted as I walked out of the cafeteria. Great start, first day of school and I’m already fighting. I was thinking this when someone stopped me outside of the cafeteria.

“Miss?” the man said. I turned to him. He looked like a really young teacher.

“Detention after school.” He said with a laugh, then he shook his head and left.
