Determination drove me on. Face wiped clean, as if a screen had been pulled down to hide my emotions, I hurried along. It was beginning to get dark, the coming night teasing the sky into twilight. Fear sat heavy on my heart as I walked as fast as I could. Eyes plastered to the floor, staring at my shoes. The cold painted bright red on my cheeks and the wind threw my hair around aimlessly.
Entering the survey corps headquarters, I shake off the invisible layer of cold that clung to my clothes. Before I trudged along the corridor, my mind focused on the gentle footsteps that seemed to echo throughout the desolate building, which was expected at this time of night.
I specifically chose this time. As it was past the cadets curfew, and being a squad leader I didn't have curfew. Knowing that Levi, Hanji, and Mike, all had a mountain of paper work left to do, I assumed that this would be the perfect time to talk to the commander. Not being able to foresee any possible interruptions.
Erwin, and I aren't exactly in a relationship, we've never really put a label on what we are, or aren't. But even though we've never said it to each other, we knew what we were. I tended to stay up late with Erwin, helping him with his paperwork, and battle strategies. We never acted informal in front of colleagues. Only Hanji, and Levi knew about mine and the commanders back and forward flirting, and would resort to giving us some shit relationship advice. Although I wished we would make it official, I was often scared that I was just a distraction from Erwin's stressful day job.
Over the past few months, Erwin had been... limiting my job. As squad leader, it was my duty to train, and lead my squad. From the training grounds to expeditions, I was their leader. However, Erwin seemed to think otherwise. To begin with it was just less paperwork, which I was grateful for, but then it was Hanji assisting me in training, Levi advising me on expeditions, then being placed in the middle of formation, away from all the action. Until they seemed to be doing my job for me. The job I've spent the last few years working relentlessly for.
The final straw was when Erwin announced I wouldn't be leading my squad on the upcoming expedition, because I wouldn't even be there. That's why I was marching to the commanders office to have a word with him.
Rapping my knuckles against his door, I heard the familiar words. "Name, and business."
"(Y/n) (l/n), we need to talk." I stated matter-of-factly.
"Come on." His voice muffled through the thick wooden door.
Stepping inside I'm greeted by a worn-out Erwin. His usually immaculate hair, was a disheveled mess. His bolo tie been tossed of somewhere to the side. His white shirt sleeves rolled up past his elbows. His head in his hands, as his eyes scanned over some papers. Looking up, he almost looked relived to me.
