In one scene, Aragog, the Acromantula tells Harry that he came to Hagrid "from a distant land, in the pockets of a traveler." This means that Scamander and Hagrid knew each other after the former traveled around the world to study, collect and learn everything about fantastic beasts. Hagrid might have been young when he met Newt, who should have been a middle-aged man back in the '40s.
Both Hagrid and Scamander were expelled from Hogwarts to later return as professors.
