~I know nobody reads these, but I advise you do. For this story, 'words in these quotes and in italics like this' are when they are using sign language. Bold is when they are using English or any other specified language. 'Underlined and in these quotes is when things are written down.' Text/speech, if not otherwise specified, is normal (in Korean, spoken). Hope you enjoy!

READER POV

Communication, I think, is quite the fundamental when it comes to human existence. Others however, may disagree with me. I could see where someone is coming from when they say money is more important, or social standings, or looking good, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with it.

In my opinion, communication is in fact so important, that without it, I believe that the world as we know it would become completely dysfunctional. Sure, the sun would continue to rise and fall, the grass would still grow, the clouds would still move in the sky, but I think it would seriously mess with the way the human world worked.

If we could no longer communicate, whether it be physically, mentally or verbally, the world would be a far more miserable place to live in.

Think of it this way: by definition, a healthy relationship cannot exist without healthy and effective communication. If we could not have healthy relationships, again, our world as we know it would fall apart in an instant!

It's rather ironic, actually, that I am the one bringing this up.

You see, I am mute. A selective mute, more specifically. For reasons I am not currently willing to share, I have chosen to no longer speak, sing, yell, etc.

It has been like this for a rather long while now, and I've quickly gotten used to it. Verbal communication, while still important, is not the most relevant method of conveying meaning. From my standpoint, non-verbal communication is what it's all about. It is not what you say that matters, it is how you say it. If you say "I love you" to someone you truly do love and your actions do not provide evidence of this, then the person you are saying it to is likely to assume that you are telling a mistruth. On the other hand, if you say "I love you" to somebody and you act like it, then your point has been proven.

I am reminded of this now as I sit in a desk at my college, staring blankly at the board ahead. My teacher, Jenni, was writing on the board rapidly, clearly very involved in what she was explaining. Well, trying to explain, as she had gotten herself so worked up over the subject that she was tripping over herself to get a coherent sentence out. Her thoughts were going so fast that, as she was trying to speak out loud, the next sentence that was queued up in her mind was already coming out, causing her to repeat words, leave some words left unsaid and stutter quite profusely.

I let a small smile creep onto my face at the sight of my normally very composed teacher getting so feverishly excited about something.

What was she so excited about, you might ask?

BTS. She was talking about BTS. Somebody had asked if there was an official sign for the band, and she was getting agitated that there wasn't one already and was beginning to make one up with the students.

Currently, she was yelling rather loudly how the sign should involve something about bullets, vests, military and... Boy Scouts?

I wasn't sure if I heard her right about that last part, though to be completely fair, I was not paying attention. So I decided to tune in.

"...and so if we chose to go down that route, we could do something like this."

She took her left hand and placed it flat, palm up in front of her and began to place her raised, right index finger over her lips. Then she pushed her right index forward towards her palm-up left hand until her index made contact with it, quickly bouncing it up and forward a couple of times. Next, she swiftly took both hands with her thumbs up to there right side and patted just at and bellow her right breast.
