Chapter 16: Blood

I stared wide-eyed as Reid took a few slow steps towards me, taking his time to size me up.

Could I seriously do this? I'd never fought against Reid before, other than the time he tried to touch me, and I'd only survived that because I'd escaped in time.

Snapping my gaze around, I forced out a shaky breath to calm my sizzling nerves. There were at least fifteen male wolves surrounding the perimeter of the backyard now, so I knew running wouldn't be an option.

This was it, life or death staring me straight in the face. For someone who'd never feared dying before, I was suddenly desperate to live. I took a hesitant step back as Reid drew closer to my frozen frame. It suddenly dawned on me that it would be Reid or I standing here in the grass in the end, not the both of us. One of us would die today.

As I took another hesitant step backwards, I watched Reid's eyes flicker into an animalistic black-shade.

"You should've never run away from me Juliet Rose, you know I'd never let you go," Reid whispered darkly, licking his red lips. "If I can't have you...nobody will," he promised me.

With that, Reid twitched and morphed into the silvery-grey wolf I knew so well. Letting my claws retract slightly, I crouched, readying myself for the fight.

"Hurry the hell up Reid, we've got a pack to take down," Alpha Michael growled impatiently. I felt rage stir within my gut; now I knew exactly what I was fighting for. If I lived through this fight, I was going to kill Alpha Michael.

Before I could finish that thought, Reid growled viciously and dashed towards me. Sucking in a sharp breath, I quickly threw myself to the side, missing Reid's snapping jaw by a few inches.

I staggered and let out a low oath of frustration.

I growled and watched as Reid quickly flipped back towards me and pounced heedlessly. Feeling utterly disoriented, I jumped back again, nearly getting my shoulder ripped up by his sharp claws.

I needed to get a grip! I knew I couldn't keep dodging him forever. Tightening my fists, I swallowed back my fear and turned on the rogue characteristic's I'd left behind.

It. Was. Time.

Snarling in unison, Reid charged towards me at the exact same time as I did in turn. Catching him a little off guard, I sidestepped at the last second and smashed my fist into his thick muzzle. Throwing myself out of his grasp, I rolled across the floor and leapt to my feet breathlessly. Reid roared and whipped his head to the side quickly, zoning in on my retreated figure. I couldn't help but smirk as a line of blood dripped onto his barring canine tooth.

I despised him with every fiber of my being.

The next few moments passed in blur as we both collided viciously, snapping and snarling. Thankfully I'd gotten a good scratch at along his shoulder but in turn, he'd sliced my forearm with a swift bite. I hissed and rolled away quickly, feeling my arm blaze up in pain.

The one thing I hated most about being a half-breed, was not inheriting a wolves' razor sharp teeth. Even if I had the same strength and claws as a wolf, I couldn't help but feel hindered without the animal's main weapon. Although, I'd learned through experience that life just isn't fair and you've got to be thankful for what you've got...or more importantly, what you had.

Flipping my eyes wide open, I watched as Reid slowly began circling me predatorily. Now, it was my turn to take the offensive approach. Ignoring my blood-soaked arm, I tapped into my lightening-fast speed and lunged at the giant wolf. Like a well-trained linebacker, I quickly shouldered the animal in the ribs, feeling the bone beneath me snap inward. I chucked darkly and ran to safety as Reid howled in rage. Backing up slowly, I suddenly felt better about my chances at winning this thing.
