➵ an image only a sleep deprived and pensive annabeth could
_____________
despite her promise to seaweed brain and the late hour annabeth decided to wait a while before going back to sleep. instead she slowly crept to a corner of her room and sat down at a small loom. annabeth had picked up this hobby over the summer and had found she was a natural.
she picked at the strings, overlapping, tying up loose ends. only half concentrating her fingers flew across the loom. while she worked annabeth thought not of her past but her present.
of seaweed brains kindness and humour, thalia's eyeroll, piper's laugh, hazels smile, katie, reyna, jason, frank, leo, nico and most surprisingly of all percy jackson.
annabeth's fingers came to a stop and she blinked the sleep out of her eyes. in front of her was a wave crashing into a grey cliff.
the blues faded into each other creating a seamless transition between the shades. the grey of the cliff contrasted dramatically but somehow the two very different colours complemented the other to create an image only a sleep deprived and pensive annabeth could.
she sat staring at her work for a few seconds before deciding that she really should get some sleep.
___
“annabeth are you up yet?” annabeth could hear piper's footsteps getting louder as she climbed up the stairs.
she jumped out of bed and started pulling on clothes “nearly ready piper!”
while in the process of scraping her hair into a somewhat presentable knot, she caught sight of the small tapestry in the corner and stoped when she noticed that one particular shade of sea green matched perfectly with percy jackson's eyes
when annabeth stared at the little patch of sea green she couldn't made out the rest of the tapestry. that's one of the reasons she liked weaving so much, every little detail was important, if one small part wasn't perfect the entire affect would be ruined.
“im coming in” piper called from the other side of the door jolting annabeth out of her trance. “are you ready yet?”
“yep, just let me find my bag”
___
annabeth walked into her first lesson of the day, science, with a serene smile on her face. talking to seaweed brain and weaving had really calmed her down. she felt. . . happy. but then she heard something that stoped her in her tracks.
thalia was sitting at her desk, Percy jackson was standing by her shoulder
“just tell me thalia” Percy whined then looked at his cousin with big eyes “please”
“no way, that hasn't worked on me since we were seven and i want to watch you suffer”
"that's so mean. i am your favourite cousin after all"
“no, and like you said earlier hazel is my favourite cousin”
"come one, pinecone face! tell me her name"
annabeth froze.
pinecone face? percy called thalia pinecone face? that couldn't be a coincidence could it?
before annabeth could think of an escape plan thalia called her over. “annabeth! thank the gods. come save me from my annoying cousin”
as soon as Percy saw her he immediately muttered some lame excuse and ran off to sit with frank zhang and grover underwood like he always did
“what did he want?” annabeth asked. trying and probably failing to act cool.
“nothing, he's just annoying” thalia then began describing her evening leaving annabeth to her thoughts as she pretended to listen.
___
as soon as science ended annabeth rushed out of the class room, much to the confusion of thalia. they usually waited for each other at the end of lessons.
annabeth swerved around a group of her class mates accidentally bumping into one in her hurried state “sorry selina” she called over her shoulder.
her next class, art, was on the other side of the school and she had to climb up three staircase before arriving breathlessly outside the classroom.
annabeth was relieved to see hazel leaning on the wall outside “hey annabeth- are you alright”
“im great- listen I've got to ask you a bit of a strange question”
“ok. . .”
“do remember the time when thalia was younger and she got stuck in a tree?”
“well I wasn't there personally” shit annabeth had forgotten hazel had only joined that family in the last few years “but percy brings it up every chance he gets”
“yeah he calls her pinecone face”
“how do you know that?”
“its not important. I need to know if anyone else calls her pinecone face”
hazel thought for a second “- no, not that I can think of anyway. are you sure you're alright?”
“me? I'm doing great” annabeth lied through her teeth.
