What if?

Nico's POV
I can't remember the last time I was genuinely happy.
But when I'm with Reyna, somehow, I can't remember what it's like to not be happy.
It's weird, wanting something so much but not being able to do anything about it.
I've ran every scenario in my head.
Each ends with me being heartbroken.
It's pointless.
We're the unlucky ones, hand picked by the gods for the sole purpose of being miserable.
Yay us.
I sighed and closed my eyes picturing reynas face in my head.
It wasn't as perfect as the real deal.
I opened my eyes and rose from my bed, the sun beginning to set over the horizon outside my window.
I needed a change of pace, something to occupy my mind away from my misery.
I grabbed my coat.
I had no idea where I was going but my feet moved on their own.
Just as I was about to open the door Reyna swung it open.
She stood there, looking at me with that same gaze she always had on.
Somehow it made me angry.
I couldn't stop the frown that spread on my face.
Her eyes traveled from mine to the jacket I was holding in my hand and back to meet my eyes once again.
"Going somewhere?"
I stepped towards her and grasped the door with my empty hand
"Yeah"
She waited for me to say more but I left through the open space in the doorway, leaving without another word.

Reynas POV
I stood at his doorway searching for answers
Did I do something?
He seemed fine just a while ago
I let out a breath of air I didn't realize I had been holding.
I guess I had been standing there for a while because when I made it back to my room the sun had set completely.
I felt confused
And hurt.

Nico's POV
I didn't understand my own actions
Or my emotions.
I looked out over the lake I had ended up at.
I wanted to go back
Say I'm sorry.
I sighed and looked up at the sky, hoping the gods could get a good look at my face and change things somehow.
A thought occurred to me.
I leapt up from a seated position and headed back towards new Rome.
Because what would happen if I acted as if the gods didn't exist?
