KATE, AS USUAL, sat at the popular table during lunch with her nose stuck in a book.

She hadn't had any idea why she didn't just go sit with Jessica and Kim, or maybe even with Jamie—it would've been much better than sitting with them after last night.

Steve had noticed that since that morning, Kate had been quiet. Almost too quiet. Of course, he had gotten used to her not saying much at lunch and just reading a book, but he wasn't used to her ignoring him in the two classes they'd had together. She hadn't laughed at a single joke he'd told, not commented on a single remark he'd made. He couldn't think of a time he'd ever heard her stay this silent.

Because of that, her silence began to drive him crazy.

He had no idea what he'd done to her to make her not even want to speak to him. Of course, he had no idea that he had done something to her that he couldn't really fix, or at least, not with just an apology and some chocolates, maybe some flowers if he was feeling generous. He couldn't figure out what was wrong with her, and he needed to know. It didn't help that if she didn't say a word to him, he couldn't know for sure that she was even upset with him.

Steve had been pulled out of his thoughts when Tommy had finally finished his story. "And that's why science doesn't make any damn sense to me."

"No, I swear. Look at this. It's totally frost-bite," Carol said, showing Tommy the bruise on her ankle. Her leg, including her oddly colored ankle, had been rested on the table, almost as if she had been trying to show all of Hawkins High what they'd been doing the night before.
