STEVE COULDN'T THINK of a time he'd been more confused in his life, and that was saying a lot for him.

"What is... What the..."

"You need to get out of here," Jonathan said, trying to push the older, taller boy out of his house. Steve, on the other hand, had asked a trillion questions by the time Jonathan spoke again. "Listen to me. I'm not asking, I'm telling you, get out of here!"

Kate, however, thought one step ahead. "Steve, get out!"

Steve had been absolutely horrified to find that Kate had been pointing a gun at him. "Wait. What! What is going on!"

"Steve, for the love of God, get out of this house in the next five seconds, or else I'm pulling the trigger and you know I won't miss," Kate said, staring him down. She knew that if her dad ever found out about this, she would get in lots of trouble, but she didn't care. Steve couldn't get wrapped up in this. Not when people had died. No matter how angry she was with him, she wouldn't watch him die.

"Okay, is this a joke?" Steve said, pulling his hands up in surrender to her. "Stop. P–Put the gun down."

"Steve, just trust me—"

"Kathy!"

"Kate," Jonathan said, looking at the flickering lights above them. Nancy had only been able to watch as the Christmas lights began to speak to them, alerting them of what was coming, but Kate hadn't even seemed to be fazed by them.
