Year: xx10 (Before the spider demon attack)

Rin watched Amaimon leave with conflicting emotion, without truly understanding the reasoning behind them. He desperately wanted to chase after him. He knew that if he did, though, he would be placed in far greater danger and it would push him further away from his human companions. But was that really such a bad thing? He had this illusion that if he just got rid of the threat in his path then he would be free. Somewhere he knew that was nothing more than pipe dream. If he gave into those instincts, he would instantly be deemed a threat and immediately hunted down and slain.

He turned his gaze back to the window. Mephisto was taking longer than usual to return. The demon recently started disappearing for a few days at a time without word. No one was sure what he was doing or where he was going. But it left Rin frighteningly alone. Without the presence of Mephisto, the exorcists around campus were only that much more aware of Rin and his actions. He could feel the stares of them whenever he would walk into a room. He knew it had something to do with Mephisto's prolonged absences. Almost as if they believed he had some knowledge of his whereabouts or incentive on him. Neither of which were true, as much as Rin would have loved the opposite. The longer he was gone the more tense things became. The more tense things became, the closer Rin was to losing control.

But even in his ever delving mind, he could still reason. And he was very aware that whatever Mephisto was doing while he was gone had something to do with the recent events surrounding the incident in the woods. He tried not to think about just what or who Mephisto might need to get involved to help cover this up. If that was even what he was doing. As far as he knew the whole event should have been purged from everyone's minds. All but a handful of them that is. The demon was a strange one, and somehow Rin knew he wouldn't like the outcome, no matter how good the intentions were, if they even were.

He was starting to get irritated just sitting around being left to his own devises. He needed someone to tell him what to do. Rin was lost. He had no purpose and no way to resolve this urge. So, he just sat and waited. Patience was never his strong suit, though for some reason he was handling it slightly better than he used to. He wondered if that was a demon trait, or perhaps a byproduct of being in nothing but demon company lately. Mephisto always seemed to never mind waiting. If he ever reappeared Rin might ask him. But on the thought of his mysterious disappearance, Rin became annoyed again.

Having finally wasted a good part of the day sitting in the office with still no sign of Mephisto, Rin decided to leave. He wasn't sure where he wanted to go, nothing really seemed appealing, but he needed a change of scenery.

By this time most of his classmates would be hovering around, either training or studying. Neither of those options were enticing. It wouldn't be long before cram classes started, and Rin was looking to avoid all of his classmates and any exorcists. A hard thing to do being trapped in a school for exorcists. And if he was honest with himself, he was still opposed to human company currently. A thought he berated himself for having, but that didn't make it any less true.

In his absent-minded walk, he found himself on the roof of the school. As aware as he was on his location, he still couldn't quite shake this trance. He sat back and leaned against the curve of the building's top. It was still so bright. He wanted so desperately for it to be night, but the closer the darkness came, the sooner he would have to be in class. It put him in a strange internal battle. Though it would be dark, he would be in a place it could not reach him. That still left his thoughts in a jumbled mess, no matter what time of day. It left him in limbo with no foreseeable way out.
