I squinted my eyes, looking around. It was so bright, light peered through the light green lights and right into my face, almost like it was that way on purpose. I looked around for my sister, but she wasn't there. My ears perked up as I called out for her.
"Ellie?" I called out and slowly stood up, stretching.
"Up here!" A familiar voice called from a higher-up branch. I looked up and sure enough, she was sitting at a higher branch. I climbed up to her, sitting next to her.
"Why are you up here?" I questioned her. She pointed to an opening in the leaves. I looked out the opening.
"I was trying to see if there were any cities nearby." She sighed and looked at me, "But there aren't any cities for what I assume to be miles." She let out a little huff and crawled down. "Let's get going though! Maybe we can make it there in two and a half days instead of three!" She laughed and jumped to the floor, throwing the backpack on her shoulder. I nodded and jumped down with her. I scanned the area quickly before looking forward, the forest only went on for a bit more before it turned into a field that didn't stop for miles. I stopped her from moving and opened the backpack, pulling out a kitchen knife.
"you can never be too careful, some cities were going to pass are predator's villages, they probably will come out and attack us if they see us." She nodded. I zipped the backpack back up and tore off some tree bark and lined the inside of my pocket with it, putting the knife in between the tree bark so the blade wouldn't cut me or my pants. "Let's go." I covered the handle of the knife with my shirt. I started to walk and she followed, walking beside me.
We walked for about fifteen minutes before getting to the field. There was a road coming up soon, and assuming it would lead to a city, I dragged my sister away from the road. It wasn't safe, even if it was a city full of prey of not. We walked along the road for what felt like hours before we actually spot a city. It was a fairly large village filled with Albacore fish. I gripped onto my sister's hand and averted my eyes from looking at the city.
"Hey!" A feminine voice shouted in our direction. I tried to walk faster and just ignore it, but my sister being herself, she stopped and responded.
"Hello!" She called out. I groaned and gave her a small death glare before I turned and looked at who screamed at us. It was a fish who was short for his species. He had black messy hair, pale skin, and he wore a black shirt with a red 'NO SMOKING' symbol on it, blue pants, and no shoes.
"Come here!" He called once more. Before I could even blink, Elizabeth was already running to the boy's direction. I chased after her. She made it to the gate before I could grab her and I sighed, standing behind her. "What do you two bunnies think you're doing?! There's Hyenas and cats over there!" He pointed to the road we were walking along.
"Yeah, yeah. We know buddy." I sighed at just talking to him. "And how about you mind your own business and keep your mouth shut." I snapped at him.
"Murphy!" My sister punched me in the arm then whipped around and looked at him. "I'm sorry about him! Our town just had an... accident..." Right after Elizabeth said the word 'accident', the fish chirped up.
"Oh! Oh no... your city is the city that..." he coughed and rubbed the back of his neck nervously. "I'm so sorry... you can stay here with us!" He smiled, showing is dull teeth.
"Sorry, but we're going to a friend's in Hather-" Before I could finish he butted in.
"Hather?! You're walking on foot?! do you have any idea how dangerous that is?!" He tensed up, his eyes practically bulging out of his eyes as he looked down at us worriedly.
"We know, but its the only place we have to go, and besides, bunnies and fish don't eat the same thing. We would have to get used to an entirely new diet and your houses are way bigger than ours! And besides, we don't even know your name." I crossed my arms.
"Oh- I'm sorry, My names Benedict." he thought for a minute before speaking again, "I have a friend in a cat village nearby, they have a car you can us-"
"A cat?! A fish like you is friends with a cat?!" Ellie squeaked at him, tensing up.
"Yup, sorry, we don't want to be killed." We left before he could even talk, practically sprinting next to the road.
After a few hours, we made it to a dark, pine forest. We headed into the forest so we could stay out of sight. We were deep enough that no one could see us but we could see the road. I gently gripped onto Ellie's arm and scolded her for talking to a random stranger, even if they were prey. I let go of her and huffed. "You're not allowed to talk to anyone but me from now on, okay?" I snarled at her. She nodded and sighed.
"Can we stop and eat?" She held her stomach, "I'm starving!" her stomach grumbled.
"Fine..." I sat down in a fairly open spot. She smiled and sat with me, pulled her bag off her shoulder, and set it down between us. She pulled out leftover salad from this week and some homestyle ranch. I just grabbed a carrot and a little container. I took the ranch from her and put it in the container, dipping my carrot in it and eating it after giving her the ranch back. It only took us a few minutes before we finished. I packed everything while she stood.
"Hmm-" She hummed.
"I got everything." I pulled the backpack on and stood, turning to look at her. She wasn't there. It's as if she had disappeared into thin air. The snap of twigs and pines come from not too far away. I ran after it. Someone had taken my sister
