18. HORNY
KALANI STARED AT THE PHONE for a good forty-three minutes before taking it up and dialing the number that she would never forget. She was sure Giovanni had left forever ago but she still was scared to call.
What would he say? Would he scold her?
She doesn't have the time to guess the answer before she hears the familiar voice of her father.
"Hello?" His Jamaican accent was thick as he spoke into the phone.
"Daddy?" Kalani calls into the phone, her voice becoming accented when she hears her father. She was used to switching between a Jamaican accent in the house and an American accent out, mainly due to the fact that some people wouldn't understand her, "It's Kalani."
"Kalani? Why you a call mi from unknown numba fah?" He had gotten loud after saying her name,as he usually does, "Weh wrong wid yuh phone?"
"Mi get a new one. The other one did mash up." She hated lying to her father but that's all she could do in the situation. "Mi just get dah one yah today."
"How yuh mash up the other one?" He questions his daughter.
Kalani shrugs, wholly aware that he can't see her, "Mi drop it pon the screen and e crack."
"Dat nuh sound like you, sweetie. Yuh usually tek care a yuh tings. Yuh neva tell me seh yah duh a spiritual journey bout yuh nah use nuh phone fi a month?" His words spill out quickly.
Kalani smacks a hand to her forehead, remembering what Giovanni told him at first, "Yeah, um, that neva really work..."
Damien Reed doesn't linger on his daughter's words, "Yuh hear from yuh bredda?"
Kalani sighs, getting hit with another string of emotions. She clears her throat and blinks her eyes to rid them of tears, "No, I haven't... Have you?"
Damien sighs giving her the answer, "Is like him figet seh him have a family. Mi nuh hear from dah boy deh fi bout three months now. Bout fi disown him, yaa man."
"Don't say that, daddy, you know seh yuh nah disown him."
He does a black parent hum, "Suh you think."
"Suh mi know."
