The weekend went by slowly, Adora and Angella becoming closer through the days. They passed the days watching movies and becoming used to each other's presence. By the time Monday came they were a lot more comfortable with one another, Adora still crept around like a mouse in the house, jumping whenever Angella came around the corner, but they started to fall into a simple routine. It was soon time for Glimmer to come home, Adora nervously fidgeted on the couch, Angella had put on a movie to try to help keep Adora calm but her anxiety was coming off her in waves.
They suddenly heard the beep of a car door locking, Adora snapped up staring at the door. Adora's mind was racing. 'What is Glimmer like? Would they get along? What if she doesn't like me?'
The door clicked open, Angella's eyes stayed on her anxious foster daughter, silently hoping her daughter would have the sense to behave. That hope went right out the window as Glimmer burst in, the biggest smile plastered on her face as she threw her bag down to book it into the living room. Adora jumped out of her skin as Glimmer skidded to a halt in front of her, sticking a hand out to greet Adora.
"Hello Adora I'm Glimmer! I've been dying to meet you!" Glimmer squealed, Adora hesitantly allowed Glimmer to shake her hand vigorously and Angella couldn't hold back a laugh at the interaction.
"H-Hi there." Adora stuttered out, she didn't know what she expected from Glimmer but this.. certainly wasn't it. She was short, much shorter than Angella, with dyed pink hair that was a similar shade to Angella's dyed lilac, they had the same eyes.
"Glimmer." Angella gave a flat warning, a soft edge to her voice but she couldn't help but smile at her daughters excitement.
"OH! Right sorry." Glimmer dropped to the ground, sitting cross legged on the ground, gazing up at Adora with stars in her eyes. "I'm calm." Angella rolled her eyes, Glimmer was sitting but certainly wasn't calm. She looked like she might've been vibrating from excitement, actually. "SO how goes it? You like living here so far?"
Adora blinked slowly as her head spun from meeting the energetic girl, talking to Glimmer felt like talking to a hurricane. "I uh.. I uh.."
"Glimmer, breathe." Adora smiled gratefully at Angella, she liked Glimmer just wasn't used to so much enthusiasm. Glimmer puffed out her cheeks a little in a bit of a pout but didn't argue. "We were watching Jaws, would you like to join us?" Glimmer rapidly nodded, jumping onto the couch on Angella's other side. Adora's tense body relaxed a little as Angella began playing the movie again, asking Glimmer about her weekend Adora quietly listened, letting herself take in the presence of her new foster sister.
When their movie finally finished Glimmer leapt up from her spot on the couch, making Adora jump a bit, and ran off to one of the cabinets below the tv to grab something.
"Do you guys wanna play a game?" She called cheerfully as she sorted through the old board games, Adora glanced at Angella who smiled encouragingly.
"Yea sure what game?" Adora asked, slowly sliding off the couch to sit closer to the coffee table in front of the couch. Angella stayed on the couch letting the girls pick out a game.
"How about.. uno?" Glimmer held up a deck of cards. Adora hesitated to answer again but gave a quick nod when she realized she was being asked, not told. Glimmer grinned deviously scootching over to the table to shuffle the cards and hand them out. "Perfect, you're both going down." Glimmer teased, Angella shot back a teasing glare making Adora giggle a little.
"We'll see about that young lady. Adora, we have to take her down." Angella sounded so serious when she turned to Adora, it made her laugh even harder, her tense body visibly relaxing.
"Oh I see how it is, it is ON!" Glimmer threw down the first card dramatically.
The game went on for about an hour, Adora's competitive spirit began to show as they got into the rhythm of playing. Angella and Glimmer were just as competitive but more dramatic so Adora's quiet attitude caught them off guard a couple of times. When Adora's last card hit the deck, Glimmer and Angella were too busy taunting each other to notice quickly enough.
"Uno!" Adora shouted, jumping to her feet to do a bit of a goofy victory dance, the display made Glimmer and Angella both burst out in fits of laughter. She realized what she was doing after a second and blushed in embarrassment, dropping back to her spot on the floor.
"Aw no way! Mom, you distracted me!" Angella laughed at Glimmer's outburst, gently placing her cards on the table while Glimmer dramatically threw hers in the deck pile.
"Sorry guys, you gotta be quicker." Adora taunted, Glimmer stuck her tongue out at the blonde and Angella watched the exchange with fondness in her eyes.
"You did wonderful, Adora. And with that, I am going to bed." She got up giving Glimmer a soft kiss on the forehead before heading to bed, she gave Adora a gentle squeeze on the shoulder as she passed. "Don't stay up too late Glimmer you have school."
"I won't!" Glimmer called down the hallway, she peeked around the corner and once Angella's door clicked shut Glimmer turned to Adora with a grin. "I'm totally staying up late."
Adora laughed, she really liked Glimmer already. 'She's so.. bubbly.' Glimmer was now in the kitchen scavenging through the pantry for something, when Adora turned around the shorter girl held out a cookie for her. Adora took it with a meek thank you while Glimmer shoved her own cookie into her mouth. The two ended up putting on another movie, but didn't pay much attention, instead just laying on the couch chatting. Glimmer had a million questions, her mind seemed to go a mile a minute, but Adora was able to dodge most of the questions by simply deflecting them back onto Glimmer.
By the time the two realized what time it was, it was too late for Glimmer to get a good amount of sleep for school.
"Oops. I should probably get to bed before mom finds out." Glimmer got off the couch stretching. "Are you gonna go to bed soon?" She yawned out, exhaustion finally hitting her.
Adora shrugged letting herself stretch out onto the couch now that Glimmer stood up, she was tall enough to reach the end much to Glimmer's surprise. "After this movie I think so." Glimmer nodding, another yawn hitting her as she headed off to her own room.
"Night Adora, see you tomorrow." She called sleepily giving a half hearted wave. Adora smiled watching her go before turning back to the movie, sleep was getting to her but it was just so hard to sleep in a new place. Her eyes fluttered shut for a moment before she shot them back open again, on and on it went like this for the rest of the night until sleep finally won and Adora ended up asleep on the couch.
XxX
Adora's mind swirled as she slept, foggy dark memories playing over and over in her mind. A dark angry figure cloaked in red, the screaming, the pain, the electricity.. She thrashed trying to almost fight the memories away, but she was helpless, feeling like a small child again. Something suddenly gripped her arm, she turned terrified of what was coming now, until she saw it was her best friend clinging to her arm. Her crazy hair puffed up in fear, a pair of terrified mix-match eyes stared up at her, tears streaking down her freckled covered cheeks.
"It's ok.. It's ok she can't hurt us if we're together." The girl squeaked, clinging to Adora's arm for dear life. Adora wrapped her free arm around the smaller girl, burying her face in her soft hair as she did the same to her chest. "It's ok, it's ok, we have each other.." Suddenly she started to sound so far away. Adora could feel her being ripped away from her side, she wanted to scream but nothing came out. 'No no no don't take her from me no.' Adora felt tears pour down her face as her friend was pulled even further away, crying out for her. "Adora! Adora. Adora.." Adora's heart felt like it was being pulled apart as her friend was taken from her, her voice was fading fast, she wanted so badly to run after her but her legs just didn't work.
"Adora!" Angella's voice ripped her from the terrifying nightmare, shooting up in a cold sweat heaving breaths raking her body. Angella was beside her, a worried look across her face as Adora finally caught her breath. "Adora.. Are you ok? You were talking in your sleep and wouldn't stop tossing and turning." Adora didn't answer for a minute before slowly nodding, coming back to reality.
"Yea.. Yea sorry just a bad dream." Adora wiped the sweat from her forehead, she could feel Angella's comforting hand on her lower back rubbing softly. 'It was just a dream.. I'm safe..' She felt a pang in her heart as she remembered her childhood, and her friend that had been ripped away from her so long ago.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Angella's soft cooing voice brought her back to reality, Adora finally looked at her foster mother. Her pale eyes were filled with worry and Adora couldn't help but feel guilty. 'I didn't mean to upset her..'
"No I-I'm ok." Adora did her best to smile, it was small and forced but she managed to still.
"Are you sure?" Angella gently prodded, but Adora simply nodded and Angella decided not to push the teen anymore. "Alright, if you want to talk I'm here ok?" Adora again nodded silently as her foster mother got to her feet. "I made waffles, are you hungry?" Adora's stomach snarled an answer, it eased the tension a bit as the two laughed, her stomach always gave her away.
Slowly getting to her feet Adora headed over to her place at the kitchen island counter, plopping down to start consuming her large stack of waffles. Angella watched her with a neutral expression, sipping on her coffee slowly as Adora wolfed down her food like always. She didn't push the teen again the rest of the morning, but she kept a close eye on her worried that Adora was struggling with something.
Adora was slowly coming back to her normal self, but the memories still swirled through her mind making her be a bit quieter than normal.
More specifically, the memory of her childhood friend being torn away from her. Their case workers had done the right thing, the home they were in was awful, that awful Ms.Weaver shouldn't have ever been a foster parent. But she couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness, wondering where her friend ended up if she was safe if she was happy. 'Wherever you are.. I hope you're happy and safe, Catra.' She silently hoped before pushing the thoughts away, no longer wanting to think of that awful awful house. Even if it was the only link she had to her childhood best friend.
