Chapter 10 - Grateful and Contented

~Third Person POV~

Everything was sorted out and planned. Zenitsu and Tanjiro now both know the meaning of the dream, and now they were just waiting for Kanao’s go signal. It was 4:45 pm and the meeting was 5 pm. They were both nervous and shy to see each other again after so long.

Zenitsu was preparing himself, drinking some water and trying to think about other things to get rid of his nervousness. His brother, Kaigaku, noticed him being a complete wreck. Kaigaku was a nice person on the inside but mean on the outside. Kind of like a tsundere. He makes some hot chocolate and brings Zenitsu a donut as well. Zenitsu was clearly surprised by this action but he was glad. He was grateful. He starts speaking up.

“Hey, Kaigaku-nii, do you think I’ll be alright?” Kaigaku was suddenly shocked with the way Zenitsu called him. Usually it was just, “Kaigaku” or “Kai”. He didn’t really mind but… this was a better way. He flashes him a smile and hugs him.

“I’m sure it’ll be fine.” He hugs Zenitsu tightly and Zenitsu returns it. Zenitsu was grateful for having a big brother like him and Kaigaku was grateful that he had a younger brother like Zenitsu. They let go and Kaigaku tells him once again.

“You’ll be ok.”

On the other hand, Tanjiro was being comforted by Kanao. They both met up at the café at 2 pm. Tanjiro was nervous, really nervous, and there was no one there to comfort him or reassure him. His sister was with his family in another city. He had no choice but to call Kanao. After he called Kanao, she quickly rushed over to help Tanjiro.

They sat down and ordered some drinks. Kanao ordered black tea while, Tanjiro ordered some iced coffee.

“H-hey, Kanao, do you think I’ll be okay?” Tanjiro asks that while trembling. He was really scared at what Zenitsu would think of him. Kanao sees this and she flashes Tanjiro with a reassuring smile.

“I’m sure its fine! It may have been a while but im sure he remembers you!” She says this but she honestly had no clue. Outside, she was relaxed and calm. Inside, she was feeling as bad as Tanjiro. She was thinking about the future a lot. Like, “what if Zenitsu rejects him?” or “what if he doesn’t remember?” She was worried about both of them but was worried about Tanjiro the most.

It was already 4:55 and Kanao and Tanjiro left together, while Zenitsu and Kaigaku left together as well. The arranged place to meet was just Kanao’s office. Even though Kanao was already there, she couldn’t help herself in helping Tanjiro. She was really grateful for what he did to her. He practically saved her life.

Zenitsu and Kaigaku were the first to arrive so they head into the office first and take a seat. Zenitsu’s nervousness came back and he couldn’t stop shaking. Tanjiro couldn’t stop shaking too. His legs were just barely hanging on. Like one misstep, he would collapse from the nervousness.

Tanjiro and Kanao were both at the door. Tanjiro was hesitating. He was afraid of what Zenitsu would think. He froze up for about 3 minutes just standing in front of the door and Kanao couldn’t hold it in any longer and just pushes Tanjiro in.

Tanjiro just basically leaps in the room with Kanao staring maliciously at him. She was getting tired but then she sees Zenitsu and his brother together. Zenitsu was sitting in a chair while his brother was standing up, back against the wall. She calls over Kaigaku to give them some space.

Tanjiro was still on the ground, hurting from the fall. Zenitsu was just confused. He was thinking about things like Kanao was with Tanjiro or Tanjiro was in front of him right now or what should he do next. Tanjiro starts to stand up and take a seat.

There was only a table in the middle of them. It has been a few minutes and no one has started to talk yet. They were both very nervous. Tanjiro decides to start.

“Sooooo….uhhh…you’re an idol now huh… i guess you did what you aspired...” Tanjiro did his best to not sound mean or angry. After Tanjiro spoke, Zenitsu quickly looked at Tanjiro and was struggling to give a reply but… he wanted to talk to him too!

“Yes, I am and i did! And you are a solo artist now, right?” Zenitsu didn’t know what else he would reply but he wanted to keep their conversation going.

“Yes…” Right after Tanjiro replied, it was just dead silent. There was awkwardness again. They didn’t know how to fix that.

“Hey.” They looked at each other because they said the same thing at the exact same time. They just chuckled at each other and then Tanjiro decides to go first.

“Um… do you…… remember me?” Tanjiro asks hesitantly because he was worried about Zenitsu’s reply.

“Yes I do! How about you?? Do you remember me??” Zenitsu asks.

“Of course I do!” Tanjiro flashes him a smile and then Zenitsu eyes widened as he saw the most beautiful thing ever. He remembers everything now. Every little detail and everything about Tanjiro. He stands up and walks towards Tanjiro. He bent down. And then he started crying while holding Tanjiro’s leg.

“TANJIROOOOOO~ I MISSED YOU SOO MUCH!!!!” Seeing Zenitsu cry like that also made Tanjiro remember everything. Tanjiro was always smiling, that’s why Zenitsu remembered. While, Zenitsu was always crying, that’s why Tanjiro remembered. Tanjiro removes Zenitsu’s hands first and then gets rid of the chair. Zenitsu stops crying because of this and confusion. Then he was shocked to see Tanjiro hugging him back.

“ZENITSUUUU!!!!!! I MISSED YOU TOO!!!!! I’LL NEVER LET YOU GO AGAIN!!!” Zenitsu hugs him back and then they both just kept on crying and crying their eyes out.

Outside the door, there were two faces that wore smiles. Kanao and Kaigaku were both very proud and happy to see them get back together. They both go and head to the lobby and just drink some coffee from the vending machine.

Tanjiro and Zenitsu wiped off their tears and since they remembered each other, they also remembered their love for each other. More importantly, the promise.

“Tanjiro, I’ll ask again. Will you marry me? Now that we’re old enough to get married?” Tanjiro blushes when he heard this. He just pounces Zenitsu and hugs him.

“Ugh! Come on!! Of course I will!!!” They cried again and hugged each other to death.

After that, they both walked out the office, hand-in-hand. They were smiling and laughing together while talking about different stories from their lives. Kanao and Kaigaku walked in front of them, giving them space and smiling at them too. Zenitsu and Tanjiro held each other’s hand and wearing both of their engagement rings.

All four of them were contented and grateful in their own way.
