MARCUS KANEUNITY DAY was a big day in the Ark's history that was always celebrated in an extravagant way. Chancellor Jaha was giving a speech like he had every year, only this time it was being transmitted to the ground.
Our first Exodus ship was launching soon and I was going to be on it. The thought of being on the ground, of finally seeing my daughter brought so much excitement.
A hand wrapped itself onto my shoulder and as I turned I was met face to face with my mother. "I heard you were going to be on the first Exodus ship."
I smiled at her and slightly moved from her grasp. "I'm overseeing security detail on the ground." I hadn't mentioned having a daughter to my mother yet, the thought still taking time to process in my own mind.
"Would you take the tree down for me?" She asked, her smile growing brighter.
"I can't, I have a job to do."
She continued to ask me if I could at least attend the departure ceremony before leaving. I told her I didn't remember the full ceremony and pulled myself away, walking toward Chancellor Jaha.
As I walked toward the Chancellor, a blast sent me through the air and to the ground. A high pitched ringing was all I could hear as people rushed around to save the children and loved ones.
I looked around and a quick glance toward my mother sent my heart to the pit of my stomach. She was lying on the ground, unable to move and blood coated her face.
I crouched next to her, lifting her head and feeling the tears brim my eyes. I had always been so distant with her. I knew it would take too much energy for her to speak and I knew she didn't have much longer.
As tears continued to cloud my eyes, I recited the departure ceremony. "Until our final journey to the ground. May we meet again."
