Fear stands behind the shoulder of every person, acting as the supreme puppeteer of their actions. Foolishness is breaking free of those strings while bravery consists of ignoring the puppeteer's will. Those strings are part of the tapestry of destiny. They are part of everyone.

Some say that our destinies are already embroidered on fate's loom when we are born. I believe what my mother told me once, though I did not know who she was at the time.

"Katalia, the only pattern on fate's loom is how much time you have. Every thread of your actions and every color of your character belongs to you. You are the one who must choose what to do with your time," she reminded me, instructing me to rise again from where I had crumpled under the last blow she'd dealt.

She thrust the pommel of my sword back into my fatigued fingers, their blisters swelling under the pressure. I remember her eyes when she waited for me to stand; kind though firm, sadness underlying both. I rose, jaw set firmly while blood dripped into my eyes, stinging and searing where it fell.

Little did I know how much I looked like my parents in that stance, let alone my grandparents. Nor did I know how one piece of paper written by my grandfather would predict how I would weave my tapestry. My sires' blood runs in my veins and I will tell their story and the story of all the peoples of Sissera. Each of us is unique. Every one of us has our own color. But together we are strong. Together we paint beauty.

Author's Note: Just as a heads up, this book works around a collection of different perspectives that will weave together to form an overarching plot. It will take a while to see how it fits together so this book requires some patience in relation to that. The individual perspectives are filled with hints and interesting narratives so I hope you enjoy them!
