Chelsea and Yui Hirasawa were enjoying their new job on the Island of Sodor, but they do look old fashioned, and did need new paint. Makise was very rude when he saw them. "Yuck! What dirty objects!" She would say.

At last, Chelsea lost patience. "Makise," she asked. "Why are you red?" "I am a splendid engine," answered Makise. "Ready for anything. You'll never see my paint dirty!" "Oh!" Said Chelsea innocently. "That's why you once needed bootlaces to be ready, I suppose." Makise went redder than ever and snorted off. It was such an insult to be reminded of the time a Bootlace had been used to mend a hole in her coaches.

At the end of the Line, Makise left his coaches and got ready for her next train. It was a Slow freight, stopping at every station to pick up and set down freight cars. Makise hated slow freight trains. "Dirty Cars from Dirty sidings!" She would say. "YEEUCK!" Starting with only a few, she picked up more and more cars at each station until she had a long train.

At first, the freight cars behaved well, but Makise bumped them so crossly, that they were determined to get back at her. Presently, they approached the top of Esdeath's Hill. Heavy Freight Trains halt here to set their brakes. Makise has had an accident with cars before, and should have remembered this. "Wait Makise! Wait!" Said her Driver. But Makise wouldn't wait. She was too busy thinking of what she would say to Chelsea when they next met.

The Freight Cars' Chance had come! "Hurrah! Hurrah!" They laughed, and banging their buffers, they pushed Makise down the hill! The conductor tightened the brakes until they screamed!

"On! On!" Yelled the Cars. "I've got to stop! I've got to stop!" Groaned Makise, and setting her brakes on, she managed to slow their mad rush, but they were still going too fast to stop in time. They thundered straight through the Station. Disaster lay ahead!

CRASH! BANG!

Something sticky splashed all over Makise. She had run into two Tar Wagons, and was covered with it from Smokebox to cab. She was more dirty than hurt, but the tar wagons and some cars were all to pieces. The breakdown train was in the yard, and they started clearing away the mess.

Kurumi and Chelsea came as quickly as they could to help out. "Look Here, Kurumi!" Exclaimed Chelsea. "Whatever is that Dirty Object?" "That's Makise!" Replied Kurumi. "Didn't you know?" "It's Makise's Shape," said Chelsea. "But Makise is a splendid red engine, and you never see her paint dirty!" Makise shut her eyes and pretended she hadn't heard. Kurumi and Chelsea took away the unhurt cars and then brought Makise back to the yard.

Mrs. Noire Met them. "Well done, Kurumi and Chelsea!" She said. She turned her attention to Makise. "Fancy Letting your cars run away! I am surprised. You're not fit to be seen. You must be cleaned at once! Chelsea shall receive a new coat of paint!" "Please ma'am, can Yui have one too?" Asked Chelsea. "Certainly, Chelsea." Replied Mrs. Noire. "Oh thank you ma'am! She will be very pleased indeed!" All Makise could do was to watch as Chelsea ran off happily with the news.
