"Medda, what happened?"
~
The two take a seat in the messy parlor, while Medda shuffles over to the kitchen and prepares tea.
"After you left y/n, no one was the same," Medda starts. She takes a deep breath and continues.
"I'm not even sure what happened to most of the newsies, but..." she pauses again, tears building up in her eyes.
"It's okay Medda, just tell me what you can." Y/n says softly, trying to calm her down.
"O-okay,"
She takes another deep breath. By then, the tea is done. She pours the steaming tea into two cups and then pours wine into another and carries the tray to the coffee table.
She takes a seat across from the two young adults, grabs her cup, and takes a long swig of wine, leaving barely any left.
"After you left, many newsies changed. Well, not just the newsies, but, everyone."
She pauses again, her face contorts in thought, trying to find a way to start. She eventually decides to just get it out of the way.
"Jack... he didn't take it too well. He started hanging with the wrong crowd, getting into trouble. He quit his job as a newsie a-and started working with Oscar and Morris, and even tormenting other newsies."
Y/n lets out a slight gasp in shock and disappointment. Medda continues.
"H-he has such a short temper, he gets angry so quick." She looks down at her hands.
"So so angry..."
Y/n reaches over and grabs Medda's hands, rubbing circles with her thumb in effort to comfort her.
It seemed to work because she took a breath and looked up again.
Medda turns and makes eye contact with y/n.
"I tried to adopt Jack." She blurts out quickly, tears streaming down her face.
"I-I thought that since I already was a 'mother figure' to him I could make it official, y'know?"
She lets out a sad chuckle.
Y/n's heart breaks.
"W-what happened?" She whispers, barely able to process the situation.
"He got angry. The angriest I've ever seen him... it was horrible. He started screaming and shouting... and pushing" she whispers the end part. Y/n's blood boils.
"He eventually got so worked up he collapsed on the floor and just cried, joining me as I was already doing so.
Eventually, he just got up and left. I haven't spoken to him since."
She sniffles.
"I couldn't go on. My heart had been broken. I barely slept or ate."
She gestures to the many bottles, "I started drinking"
"I had to shut down the Bowery because I was in no shape to run it. My life seemed to be over. First I'd lost you, and then Jack, who is always seen as a s-son." She let out a loud sob and then broke down.
Y/n and Spot look at her, their hearts shattering.
A steady flow of tears stream down y/n's face.
After a few minutes of crying, Medda finally calms down.
She looks up at the two with a serious look, her face still damp from the tears.
"Y-you should go."

*You will see in older chapters that I have made changes. Eileen was previously known as Kadence for anyone who's confused. After some circumstances, it felt right for me to change it. It makes me feel better, so sorry if that upsets any of you, but I'm gonna do what makes me comfortable as a writer and as a person. Thank you.
