...

I heard a knock at the door and set down my broom.

"I'll get it," I called out to Miss Josephine.

I put the rag I was wiping the table down with over the sink to dry and answered the door. I opened it to see three children, a girl with long brown hair that looked about my age, a boy that seemed slightly younger, and a baby girl in the eldest's arms.

"You must be the Baudelaires," I said, opening the door for them to come in.

"Yes, I'm Violet, and this is my brother Klaus and my sister Sunny. Do you live with our Aunt Josephine?" the eldest spoke.

"No, why, I'm not even related to her, but my grandparents knew her parents so our families have always been close, so I usually come help her with chores and such." I shut the door and turned to them. "You can set your bags down here, I believe she's currently in the library, I'll take you to her."

I walked down the short hallway and opened the doors as they followed me in.

"Miss Josephine? The Baudelaires are here." I said.

She put down her book and stood up. "Hello, children! You must be Violet, this must be Klaus, and this must be little Sunny," she said, adressing each one individually.

"Yes, and you must be our Aunt Josephine," Violet replied.

"I'm ever so sorry about everything that's happened to you three. Of course, I myself have experienced losses as well."

"We're sorry to hear that."

"Oh, it's alright. Life goes on of course, y/n, would you show them to their room please?"

"Of course," I said, motioning for them to follow me.

I led them up the stairs and closed the door behind them.

"Who did aunt Josephine lose?" asked Klaus.

I sat on one of the beds before saying, "Her husband, Ike."

"What happened?" Violet inquired while putting a shirt away in a drawer.

"He didn't wait an hour before swimming," I began.

"Did he get cramps? That's what's supposed to happen," said Klaus.

"Typically, it is. But you see, Lake Lachrymose has leeches, and not just any leeches. They can smell even a little bit of food from far away, and if they smell food on you, they start to swarm and, well, I won't go into detail but they do more than suck blood. I reccomend you don't bring it up with Miss Josephine, she's very sensitive about it," I explained.

"That's terrible," said Violet.

"Indeed." I stood up to unpack Sunny's bags so Violet didn't need to.
...

Once we were finished unpacking their things, we went downstairs to eat some lunch. We sat down and Klaus seemed surprised when he ate his first spoonful of soup.

"It's cold," he quickly covered his shock with a smile.

"Oh yes, I'm afraid to heat anything up with the stove, it might burst into flames," explained Josephine.

Sunny gave her a confused look.

"This is chilled cucumber soup," Josephine continued. "It's a recipe I learned in Egypt, where I was briefly employed as a snake charmer."

"Our father lived in Egypt before we were born, is that why-" Violet began.

"I don't talk about that," Josephine interrupted.
