I sat beside Roman at the dinner table, as we all ate in silence.

Roman's foot gently tapped mine.

"Should we go through the motions at least?" Olivia asked setting her fork down.

"How was everyone's day?" She asked as I took a bite of my chicken.

"Every breath, a gift." Roman raised his glass as I chuckled at him.

"Where did you disappear to, darling?" Olivia asked Shelley.

The taller girl, grabbed her phone and started tapping.

"I took the bus." My eyes lite up.

"Seriously?" Roman asked.

"That's great, Shell!" I exclaimed.

"I'm sorry. What was that?" Olivia asked.

"I took the bus." She typed again.

"Quit being so goddamn literal." Olivia snapped.

"Why on earth would you take the bus anywhere?" Olivia asked.

"And without my permission..."

"Give her a break. Jesus, I don't even know how to do that! Ha! Ha! Ha!" Roman said.

"That's why you have me love." I touched his knee.

"I'm sorry. Is this a joke to you?" Olivia asked Roman.

She looked back at Shelley, as I looked at the taller girl too, to see she had earrings.

"Oh, Shelley darling, earrings! What have you done to yourself?"

Olivia rolled her eyes before looking at Roman and I.

"Did you have any hand in this?"

"No." Roman and I both said.

"I'm simply perplexed." Olivia said.

"You want to make a mockery of yourself? You would connive to demean yourself. Do you know what true deformity is?" She grabbed Shelley hand.

"The most intolerable and repellent of them all? Stupidity." I gripped my fork.

"Now remove them."

"Stop." Roman said.

"I'm sorry. Was that a command?" Olivia asked.

"Leave her alone."

"Or what? Shelley, remove them!" Olivia snapped.

"Leave her alone."

"So help me, you will end up in the fucking gutter!" She pointed her finger.

"No, I won't." Roman stood up.

"Do you think I'm kidding?" Roman leaned closer.

"No.I know you're lying." He sat down.

"I've seen it."

"Seen what?"

"The will." Olivia looked scared.

"This summer, when Annette didn't like the way you talked to her-- not everyone likes being called that-- she took me into her office and showed me the will just to spite you." He leaned back.

"It's all mine." I took a sip of my wine.

"I'm sole beneficiary." I looked at my fiance.

"And on my 18th birthday, I gain control of the entire trust. Every cent."
