Kit laughed and looked at her with nothing but raw amusement. "I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I like to think we know each other well enough to not be at this point."
The statement hung in the air languidly, much in the same way as if he had said he found dogs cute or the sun hot, and Grace just nodded. The look of contentment was stuck on her features.
"Is it just the balcony scene?" Kit asked.
Grace looked at him as if she were holding in a secret. "Well, I mean, if we suck."
He gave a half-cocked expression, perplexion making its way into his eyes. "Mind expanding?"
"If we're good, we'll get the part when we put on the play this year. And I've always gotten the parts I try out for."
"Well, I'm not in plays...If I get this part I'll probably give it to someone else."
Grace glared at him like he just said he'd killed someone. "Are you kidding me? You have to take it. You would be a great Romeo."
Kit shrugged, "I don't have the right look for Romeo... Isn't he supposed to be like, I don't know, gorgeous?"
"Like I said, you'd be a great Romeo," Grace said with a small roll of her eyes, although her lips curved into a surreptitious smirk.
"You're very...cheeky. You’re not afraid to speak your mind, huh?"
She widened her eyes dramatically, keeping the grin on her face. "Why should I be?"
Kit shrugged, "Good question."
Grace smirked at him, thinking good answer, but not saying it. Instead, she just nodded confidently and continued on with her mini-lecture. “Anyway, I won’t take no for an answer. You have to be Romeo if you get the part.” Her eyes opened up to him like she was ready to decipher the entire world and break apart every argument he had, challenging him to disagree with her.
Kit sighed, "I don't know...we'll see..."
She was ready to utilize her strong opinion on the matter when something on Kit’s face told her to drop it. He looked forlorn, and like he didn’t want to get into this conversation any more than he already had. So Grace let her heart get the better of her, and didn’t go with what her brain was telling her to. She dropped the argument and changed the subject back to the reason they were there. “So, ready to read?”
Kit bit his lip a tad and ran a hand through his hair before letting out a sigh, "I think I'm just going to head home. I'm not feeling well at the moment." He gave Grace the book back and stood up, grabbing his jacket and phone.
Grace was caught so off-guard by his sudden change in demeanor that she had no idea what to even say to fix it. “No, Kit, wait.”
When he turned back to face her, she continued. She wasn’t even sure what she was saying before she heard herself speak the words.
“Look, we don’t even have to read. We can do something else. I just want to spend time with you.”
"I want to spend time with you too, Grace but right now I have to go..."
The brooding wasn’t lost on the blue-eyed girl but she sighed and let it go “Alright, fine.”
Kit shook his head a bit, "I'll see you Monday, Grace."
Grace bit her lip, feeling nothing if not immensely annoyed. Alongside that, though, was curiousity. “Yeah,” she mumbled after him. “See you Monday.”
When Monday rolled around, Grace could tell Kit's vibe was off, he was here for only a week, but in that time he dressed to impress, but not Monday. Normally Monday was everyone's "bum day" but Kit didn't seem like one of those people. He was wearing sweats and a hoodie. When he passed Grace in the hall he usually said "Hi" but today he didn't. Something seemed off.
Passing him in the hall was a mix of anger and worry, to Grace. She had texted him three times over the weekend, and he hadn’t responded to a single one. One one hand, she wanted to know what was wrong and help him feel better. On the other hand, though, she wished she had less self control so that she could ignore him until he talked to her and apologized.
So she settled somewhere in the middle. “Hey, what’s your problem?” Grace’s tone was not completely rude, but it was as unkind as she had been for a long time.
Kit raised an eyebrow, turning his head to the left to look at her. "Nothing." He moved his head back to looking at his locker, and stuffing books in it from his bag.
Grace noticed a small picture of him and another teenage girl hanging up on the inside of his locker door, they looked about fifteen, maybe sixteen.
She pushed the thought of the picture to the back of her mind, and crossed her arms stubbornly. “It’s obviously not nothing. If you’re mature about it, then maybe I’ll consider fighting the urge to punch you right now.”
Kit's head whipped to his left once again, "Like I said, nothing is wrong." He slammed his locker shut and stormed off down the hallway.
Grace had some concern to the one picture hanging up in his locker. She also noticed it didn't have a lock on it either...
What was that saying, again? Curiosity killed the cat? But there was something more to it...satisfaction brought it back.
She opened the locker. So sue her.
Inside, when she saw the picture up close, she had to repress the small pinch of jealousy that overtook her.
