She opened the locker. So sue her.
Inside, when she saw the picture up close, she had to repress the small pinch of jealousy that overtook her.
She took the picture down and flipped it over.
Walker & Harmon 2013 sophomore homecoming.
"Harmon?" Grace questioned herself softly.
"Who told you that you could look inside my locker?" Kit had both of his eyebrows raised. "And why would you take down my picture?"
Grace dove on the defensive. "Well, you can't care too much if you don't have a lock. Really, it's your own fault. I'm surprised no one's stolen anything."
"That doesn't give you the right to snoop through it anyways." Kit snatched the picture out of her hands and stuffed it in his backpack.
"Who's the girl? In the picture?" She knew she was pushing her luck and her whatever-relationship with the boy but at this point she didn't care about how she came across.
"No one. Next time mind your own business please." Kit shut his locker once again.
Grace crossed her arms over herself and nodded defiantly. "Yeah. Got it."
Kit shook his head and stalked off down the hall and towards his first period class.
Drama class came too quickly for either of their likings, and when Grace walked through the doors to the room and saw Kit, she realized that this was the first time in her life that she'd felt anything but content while in drama. Well, she mused angrily, that's going to have to change. She wasn't about to let some brooding boy ruin this class for her.
Kit took a glance at Grace quickly but moved his head back down to his copy of Romeo and Juliet. He was picking at his nails, it was a nervous habit of his.
She tried to convince herself not to steal small looks at him, but her self-control was seemingly not so great. Grace picked up her gaze to stare at Kit and her eyes diverted to his hands easily.
"You shouldn't do that, you know," Grace intoned. There was a small edge to her voice that didn't leave room for anything but annoyance.
"I know," Kit retorted, and he did. When he was fifteen, he picked at his nails so bad that they bled all the. He stopped when he met Zoe but things between them hadn’t worked out, to say the least. After that, the habit returned with a vengeance.
Grace cleared her throat to make it clear that she didn’t have anything else to say to him. She was stubborn, and she would stay icy until she got her apology.
Kit finally sighed and set aside his pride in favor of getting the girl to talk to him again. “Look, I’m sorry for ditching. Is that what you want to hear?”
She hummed, examining her nails and taking her time before responding coldly. “I want more than a half-assed sorry. Walker, here’s the deal. If we’re going to keep doing...whatever it is that we’re doing, you can’t just change your mood on a dime and storm out without telling me what’s going on. I deserve better than a bad attitude from you.”
"Listen, I'll tell you what's happened to me in the past soon. We don't know each other well enough for me to tell you exactly what had happened.”
She raised an eyebrow, but accepted this. “Fine. See how great communication can be?” Grace responded, taking one last jab at him. “But seriously, you’re not the only one with baggage, okay? Don’t act like you do and then get mad when people try to help.”
