"Hey, yo! Maggie!"
She turned in the hallway with books in her arms, looking to her brother who jogged down the hall after leaving his group of friends. She didn't know what he wanted or why he was approaching her. However, it was better than Rick and Cole, she knew that.
Maggie and Scooter hadn't spoken about the showdown and when their father mentioned it at dinner the other night, Scooter simply said it was a friendly game versus the JV team. Maggie did want to mention what he'd done to that team previously with his friends, but didn't want to cause any more trouble than needed.
He slowed his pace down upon approaching her with a smile and she swayed side to side on her heels, waiting for him to speak first because she didn't have anything to say to him. Not then at least, she was busy going to her next class, having a test.
"At dinner the other night, thanks for not ratting me out." He told her, pulling a hand through his hair, which flopped over his forehand like it previously was.
She shrugged. "It's what siblings do. Besides," She looked down to her feet with a small smile. "Dad would've blown as gasket if he knew what else had been going on."
"I know. He'd ground me."
"Yeah." She nods. "I have to get going to my class. Got a test."
"Right, see you later." He waved.
"Bye, Scott." She waved back and he shook his head at the name, but continued down the hallway in a jog, meeting his pals once again.
She'd gone to her next class quietly and sat herself down. Putting her books away below her chair and got a pencil out, ready to write the test and hope for a good note.
She was oddly surprised when she saw Charlie Conway walk into the classroom and headed for the empty desk at the back of the class. Maggie didn't turn like every other student had in awe, she knew that Charlie didn't like her, so she wasn't going to entice him to gawk at her about his issues and hatred toward her. She didn't want or need that, finding it childish. Not to mention she didn't want to seem concerned about him, because she had been.
Charlie smiled to his pals, shaking their hands and patting their shoulders as he took his pencil case out, getting ready to write the test. Conway though stared over to Maggie, he noticed she hadn't looked at him. At that moment, he wasn't completely back to himself when it came to hockey, but with his academics and friends, he was back on top. He realized who he really was and why it was important to remain the guy he was, for the others and himself. Bombay helped him realize that.
When class had finished, Maggie followed the group of kids to the front of the class and placed her test face down on the pile of papers, leaving the classroom. She took a left down the hall to go find Nevaeh, who had been dreading her biology class because it meant dissecting frogs and getting dirty. She had her partner, who lucky her her, had Luis Mendoza. He did most of the work and got a laugh out of making fun of her for being too uptight on touching a frog.
She took the notes, which were written beautifully in a nice cursive font, for the two of them. Nevaeh handed Luis tools here and there, but there wasn't much more to it than that. He did his own thing while she observed and wrote.
"Mags!" Nevaeh cheered. "Guess what? Guess what!?" Maggie pondered over the excitement of her best friend and waited to hear the great news. "Aren't you gonna ask 'what'?"
"What?" She replied.
"I was lab partners with Luis Mendoza!" She gawked.
"And let me guess, you didn't touch the frog?"
Nevaeh shook her head with a giggle, unable to help herself that the amphibian was slimy and green. "No, she didn't." Luis approached.
"It was funny." Russ laughed, throwing an arm across Luis's shoulders. "The girl's got a lower pitch scream than he does." He points.
Luis rolled his eyes, annoyed that Russ liked embarrassing people for the fun of it. "I do not."
"Does too. Even Averman does. Which reminds me," He turned and scanned the hall. "That redhead stole my animal crackers and didn't give 'em back...Averman!" He shouted.
Russ jogged down the hall and left, leaving the two girls with Luis, who laughed and Luis bit his lip. "Don't you have a hockey game?" Maggie asked.
"Yeah," He nods, looking over to her. "How do you know?"
"Whole school knows when gamedays are." She answered.
"I don't." Nevaeh laughed and walked off. "Come on, Mags. We gotta hit up that Asian restaurant downtown. Bring your brother."
"Why? Which one?"
"Scooter, duh." She answered.
"Bye, Luis." She smiled and turned, jogging down the hallway to meet her best friend. "Why Scooter?"
Nevaeh raised a brow and stopped at her locker, turning the lock before opening the door. "Um, so he can drive us."
Maggie leaned against the side of the locker with crossed arms, glancing at her friend. "Are you sure you're not crushing on my older brother." She emphasized the 'older', because he was indeed older than they were.
"No way." She shook her head. "We make him look cool."
Maggie shook her head with a chuckle. That was her best friend. How? She didn't know, but she was glad to be best friends with Nevaeh. She was her ride or die till the end and the end wasn't even near. Sometimes Nevaeh could be annoying, but Maggie wouldn't trade the girl for the world, they were attached at the hip.
