The next day, Maggie was stopped outside the school as she was coming back from her brother's game. Danny's hockey game, not Scooter's. The game was a victory for her brother's team and she was glad they'd won, they deserved it for all their hard work. She hadn't seen Danny in a little while, only during school days, but even then they didn't speak much. Both were busy with their own lives, with school work, friends, and other things.
Her hair blew behind her shoulders as the cowboy approached in a hurry, finding out terrible news just now. He needed her help because he knew her father was part of the board and could possibly help him and his team.
He stopped two feet away from her, lifting a hand up and indicated to give him a moment as he caught his breath. She shifted her weight to her right side and waited, when he caught his breath, he stood up and looked at her. "Hey, I was wonderin' if you could help us. Dean came up to us before we were leaving and said we had until the end of the semester before we gotta go and find other educational opportunities."
She was confused. "I'm not understanding."
"Neither did I, but then Russ put it into words I'd understand."
"And?"
"The board's gonna withdraw our scholarships. All of us." He told her.
"That's all you had to say, Dwayne."
She didn't know what else to say, let alone what to say that would make him feel better about the situation. It made her ponder over how the board had suddenly gotten the idea to withdraw the scholarships, it didn't make sense to her.
"Can ya help us?" He asked, almost pleading, but not in a begging way. He was serious about it, just wondering if there was something she could do to help.
He awaited her answer, her thoughts. "How?" She furrowed her brows and looked up to him. "How do I help with this?"
"You said your father's on the board, so, maybe you could help us sway it in our favor."
She sighed. "It doesn't quite work that way and I'd love to help... Did Conway put you up to this?"
Dwayne was taken back by her sudden question, blaming his friend for this, but he'd come to see her willingly. On his own accord, because he believed she could help him and his friends. Dwayne shook his head at her. "No, I came here myself."
"I can try and see what I can do. My father doesn't quite like us snooping around in his affairs." She sighed and he nodded. "I can surely try."
"Meetin's tomorrow." He brought his hands to his hips. "Team's afraid we might not be here in two days."
She inhaled deeply before replying. "No, you will." Maggie smiled to him and he smiled back, liking her reassuring smile, but he still feared they might be leaving Eden Hall.
As much as he disliked the people, he found the opportunities there fun and he found himself in a friendship with some the polar opposite of him in terms of lifestyles. They were both kind and welcoming people, but friendly, and both could be serious when needed to be. They were laid back and cool, he found it nice to know someone who wasn't a country hunk, hockey enthusiast, or from Texas.
"I'm just confused on how this was brought up so quickly like this." She spoke up.
He raised his brows, not clueing that in and began to thought about it himself. "Maybe Varsity's doin' it to get back at us."
"For the ant thing?"
"No," He shook his head, looking to the ground as he pondered a bit more. "They don't like us too much, not like you and Nevaeh do." He chuckled at the last bit. "I'd suspect they want us gone."
"Makes sense." She turned and began to walk off, he followed her. He really looked like he was from Eden Hall with his red and white track pants and sweater, his plaid undershirt not matching at all and bothered her, but that was the least of their problems. "I've overheard Varsity saying they'd been wanting to get you guys out. Scooter even said not to worry about it."
"Why'd he say that?"
She shrugged. "Guess he didn't want me saying something about it."
They turned on the sidewalk. Dwayne noticing a few of his teammates tossing a football around the grass for the fun of it. He'd made sure to go the other way, trying not to be seen because he didn't want to be teased.
He rubbed the back of his neck. "I over heard them the other day." He began. "Talkin' about you and how you were getting too good of friends with us."
"What did my brother say?"
"Said not to worry about it, that you were his sister, not theirs." He shrugged, not remembering the full of it. "Said you'd ruin it all."
She laughed, because it was true. "Yeah, because he's right. If I'd of known they were scheming against you guys, I'd of said something."
"Troublemaker." He mumbled.
"Hey!" She shoved his shoulder. "I heard that."
"I know ya did." He laughed and she shook her head, walking ahead of him and spun around on the sidewalk. "Hey, the other day, when we were supposed to go out for that mall tour, I'm sorry I didn't show up."
She stopped spinning around and he walked over to her. "It's fine, I understood."
"It ain't fine. Friends don't do that."
She shrugged. "The best of friends make you wait." She points. "Like Nevaeh, god, she can be late sometimes." She laughed. "But don't worry, Rancher Dwayne, I'm not mad."
"Got it." He was shocked to know she wasn't mad, because she was a preppy, he figured she would hold a grudge against him and not be friends anymore, but Maggie Brooks wasn't that kind of person.
He smiled to her and she stepped over to him, noticing he did feel bad about it. "Hey, perk up." She leaned in towards his cheek and placed a kiss. "You got to help fight for your stay here." She points to him, walking backwards. "Cause one person won't make a damn dent."
