Chives paced around restlessly, the sounds of the contestants drowned out to a simple background noise, like wind in a field. Recently, he and Thermos had gotten extremely close. He'd stick up for the grey cup when others, especially Pepper, told him to be quiet when he was screaming. Others had started occasionally giggling and quietly commenting, "ooh, someone has a crush!" whenever Chives stuck up for Thermos. Chives sighed, annoyed and scared. There was an elimination soon, and Thermos had happened to have annoyed Pepper during her fashion show. She ended up throwing a rock at him. It replayed in Chives' mind:
Pepper walks down the catwalk, making poses and faces at everyone as they "ooh" and "aah" at her. Chives watches with his same slightly agitated expression. He looks around, secretly nervous as Thermos screams in the distance. He looks back up to the stage to see Pepper had paused and was staring at something. Chives follows her gaze and feels his heart lurch. She's looking at Thermos. "Shut. Up!" she yells, throwing a rock at the cup. He stops screaming as the rock hits him with a clank, and knocks Thermos over. Some of his brown liquid spills out onto the grass. Chives looks on, anxiously awaiting the screaming to start again. But it doesn't.
The small white figure rushes over to Thermos and helps him up. "You okay?" Chives asks quietly, his voice faultring. Thermos nods, his eyes wilder than ever from shock. Chives backs away as Pepper glares at him, narrowing her eyes. Chives smiles awkwardly and shuffles away to his spot at the end of the walk. Pepper looks on as if nothing happened, ignoring Thermos and the contestants' shocked reactions. They'd all stopped cheering Pepper on, and instead were scowling at her. She got to the end of the walk and twirled in front of Chives. "So, Chives, what do you think?" Chives looked around quickly, the others staring at him, silently urging him on. He looks back at Pepper. "Beautiful, Madam Grey," he groans. "Good," she responds.
Chives is ready to turn away when Pepper bends down in front of him. "See me after this thing is done," she growls through gritted teeth, her orange-brown eyes blazing like fire as she stares at him. "Y-yes, Madam Grey," Chives stutters, barely managing to maintain eye contact with her. "Good!" she repeats, standing up straight and turning around, walking back down the catwalk. Chives sighs and leaves.
Chives shook his head. "Ahem." He looked up and froze, seeing Pepper staring at him. "A-ah, Madam Grey! How can I help you?" he smiled nervously. "Explain," Pepper growled, her hands on her hips. "Explain what?" Chives asks innocently. "Oh, don't play the victim card Chives, we don't have time for that. The elimination is starting in ten minutes!" she yelled. Chives sighed quietly before explaining, "well, you see, uh, I personally don't think that throwing a rock at Thermos was... fair." Pepper narrowed her eyes. "B-but I'm not challenging your decisions!" he added nervously. "You've also been standing up for him a lot recently. What's going on between you two? You're not..." Pepper gasped. "You're not dating, are you?"
Chives' heart beat faster at the accusation. "What? No no no, me and Thermos are just... friends." He felt himself shaking as Pepper raised an eyebrow. "Really. Are you sure? Because usually when objects get close like that, they tend to be dating." Chives grew protective. "Not necessarily! Some objects are friends, and they're close, but they're not necessarily dating!" Pepper smacked Chives, sending him stumbling backwards a couple of steps. Chives put his hand up to his face and stared at her with rage. "Don't you dare yell at me! I know better than you. Just, stop being touchy with Thermos, and I'll leave you alone." Pepper walked away like nothing had happened.
Chives stood, watching Pepper walk away, shocked. Thermos walked up to the white figure and tapped his shoulder. Chives turned around and jumped. "O-oh, it's just you," he mumbled. Thermos smiled at Chives and grabbed his arm, dragging him away. "Oh, okay," Chives mumbled, not arguing as he followed Thermos. The grey cup smiled to himself. Chives was cute and simple. He dragged the vegetable to the top of the smiling tower. Despite not screaming all the time, Thermos still had no other sound to make, which meant he had no voice (lmao Teardrop ripoff). He sat down with Chives, then put down a piece of paper and grabbed a pencil, then started writing. Chives watched him, intrigued at his neat handwriting. He held up the paper for Chives to see.
'Tell me what happened with Pepper' it read. Chives looked up at Thermos, who smiled encouragingly. Chives sighed and began to tell the story. He brought his knees up to his chest as he talked, keeping his hand on his face the whole time. "...and then you helped me," he finished, smiling a little at Thermos.
Thermos leaned over and grabbed the arm that was on Chives' face. "Wh-" he tugged it away, his eyes widening. The slap mark had turned a pale red. Tears brimming Thermos' eyes, he hugged Chives and silently sobbed. Chives hesitated, then hugged Thermos back.
"Uh... sorry to ruin the moment, but the elimination is about to start," a voice informed the pair. Thermos looked up at Kumquat, tears still staining his face. He let go of Chives awkwardly and nodded. "R-right. We'll be there in a second; sorry," Chives responded. Kumquat turned away. "Lovebirds," he mumbled jokily. Thermos looked at Chives and offered his hand. "Just a second," the vegetable said, grabbing the paper and pencil. He took Thermos' hand awkwardly. The two blushed as they walked down the tower together.
They got to the bottom of the stairs. Chives let go of Thermos' hand. The cup looked at him. "It's probably best if we don't do that in public," he chuckled. Thermos smiled again and pushed open the door for Chives.
"Hey, everyone! It's elimination time once again, and I think we already know who's out," Pepper began, looking at Chives. He hurried up the stage and headed to Pepper's chair with the plate and envelope. Chives knew who it was as well as Pepper did, and the small vegetable held back tears as he gave the plate to Pepper. She picked up the envelope. Chives looked for Thermos, who was nervously watching Pepper. "And the contestant eliminated is..." Chives held his breath and turned back to Pepper. "...Thermos! Because he's like, so annoying with all that like, screaming!" Chives' heart dropped. He looked back at Thermos. The poor cup's head drooped as he walked over to the black hole. "Wait!" Chives yelled, stumbling as he ran over to block the hole from Thermos. He angrily stared at Pepper.
"Let him go through!" she yelled. Chives didn't move as he held his arms out. He narrowed his eyes at the host. "You know what? I've had enough of your attitude!" Pepper yelled, getting up. Thermos stepped back, looking at the pair. Pepper stood in front of Chives, who was visibly shaking. Thermos ran to Chives in fear, grabbing him a split second before Pepper lunged at Chives, pushing him into the portal. Thermos screamed as he stumbled, instantly pulling back with all his might. Chives watched, panicking, as the other objects retaliated against Pepper's actions. Kumquat and Hay Bale grabbed onto Thermos, pulling backwards too. They tugged Chives out, who then collapsed onto Thermos' shoulder, shaking like leaves in the breeze.
Chives was blinded with fear, the world around him a blur. He felt Thermos holding onto him tightly, as if Chives would be gone when he let go. He regained his sight and looked at Thermos. The grey figure was looking away from Chives, who followed his gaze. His heart jumped with excitement. Everyone was beating Pepper up; punching, kicking, you name it. Shards of glass and pepper granules fell to the ground at an alarming rate. Before Chives knew it, the remains of Pepper were lying in a pile. He held back laughter, then wriggled out of Thermos' grip. Chives made his way to the crowd, pushing past everyone. He stood in front of the remains. He smirked. "At least you won't have to deal with my 'attitude' anymore," Chives chuckled. Kumquat started hooting with laughter and left the circle of objects.
Thermos looked at the crowd, laughing as hard as a mute object could at the witty comment. He saw Chives peek through the crowd. He made eye contact with Thermos, then pushed through again. "Excuse me, please. Oh, sorry." The cup listened to Chives as he got through everyone and ran at Thermos for a big bear hug. "Thanks," he mumbled.
