Chapter 2: The Boys are Back

Dance class had just finished, and I was heading out of the dance studio when Evan tapped on my arm. "Hey!" He smiled at me. Evan had been one of my closest friends for the last two years. He had an obvious major crush on me which Flynn and Julie loved to point out every opportunity they could get, but I had a strict rule: no dating the living. So... basically no dating. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss dating though.

"Hi." I said.

"I just wanted to tell you.. your group looks great." He said. "I'm really excited to see you guys perform at the pep rally on Wednesday."

"Thanks." I smiled. Right at that moment, Carrie walked past me, purposely bumping into me. I turned around to glare at her, and we made eye contact.

"My bad." She said with a smirk on her face. "Hey thanks again for opening for Dirty Candy."

Instead of responding, I just turned around and took an audible deep breath. Evan noticed my anger, and he put his hand on my shoulder.

"Don't let her get to you. Your group won for a reason." He said, giving me a reassuring smile.

"Thanks, Evan. You always know the right thing to say." I smiled, feeling much more calm.

"Actually I wanted to see if you would be willing to work with me for the next project. We seemed to work really well together last time, and I thought..." I could see another Evan ramble coming on, so I decided to speak up before he really fell down that rabbit hole.

"Evan, I'd love to. I'm still rehearsing with the girls until Wednesday, but we can set up a time to meet at the pep rally. Does that sound okay?" I asked.

"That sounds perfect." He smiled.

"I have to go find Julie, but I'll see you around?" He nodded in response, and I left to go to Julie's locker. When I got there, Julie and Flynn were already there talking.

"Hey disappointment, underachiever." I said as I approached them. They both turned to me. Flynn didn't seem happy though. "What's wrong?" I asked.

"Julie is thinking of just winging her performance for class today." Flynn said, crossing her arms and clinging her binder closer to her.

I turned to Julie, and I knew my face perfectly showed how I felt: disappointed. "Julie... Mrs. Harrison said this is your last chance."

"I know I was there." She said. Julie had such a relaxed demeanor, and I didn't know if that should make me less or more worried.

That's when we all heard Carrie. "See you at the rally!"

We all turned to see her handing out flyers, and I knew what it was for. The calmness Evan brought me was gone, and I was back to being angry.
