I'm moving you into a house with me right now
somewhere on the coast
where the sun never sets
surrounded by chamomile and sycamore trees
a pretty little cottage
with intimacy built into the walls
so you'll never remember Loneliness
mountains of candle wax and mottles of ink blots
books with cracked spines and yellowed pages
oak floors making love to the the soles of our socks as we dance
to the sound of our laughter
we are poetry in motion, darling
but you don't know it yet

I like the way god painted you
in warm hues and sepia tones
they can be the colours of our walls if you like
you are harsh lines and rough edges
but I write about them softly
poets go their whole lives searching for muses like you
I ask the universe how I got so lucky
she says she wants to meet you one day
but you don't know it yet

I told you with my eyes
but you're looking at hers
and the millions of stars hibernating in them
you told me you don't like astrology
you told me you don't like love poems either
I bet I could change your mind
you have the type of name that belongs in the margins of notebooks
surrounded by hearts
scribbled in giddily by lovesick girls and boys
it smells of peaches and marmalade
hugging the wool of our carpets
nesting in our pant cuffs
I'll carve it into one of the sycamores outside
write you into mother nature's flesh
watching over us and the forest of daisies we lay in
weaving the empty space between toes and nimble fingers
your foot twitches just now
could you feel their petals kiss your skin?
does it scare you?
she's looking at you now
I'm wondering if she saw it too
you laugh
and put your head down like you always do
I notice these things
but you don't know it yet

I find myself matching names on oil paint tubes
to the pink clouding your cheeks
knitting the way the light hugs your cheekbones
onto my eyelids
so I have something to look forward to whenever my eyes grow heavy
you look back at her
and I see you do the same
golden thread to match her hair
you don't know it yet
but I do
