Chapter Seven

They sat at a table staring at one another. Around them, the roar of a food court on a Saturday afternoon. Ruby spotted many of her classmates at this popular hangout but paid them little attention. The Demon sitting across from her staring defiantly at her narrowed her field of vision. He sat so stiffly because he didn’t want to be there, trying to stab her with his eyes. She’s locked his mouth shut because he’d told her she was a bitch. Strangely, she didn’t mind the name-calling but thought that she’d better punish him or else he’d think she was inept at controlling him.

“My favorite color is yellow,” she read from a list she’d written for the both of them to remember just in case her mother got nosy. “Your favorite color is green. My favorite music is pop rock and you like punk rock but we agree on funk. We both LOVE Chinese food and our first date was at The Golden Noodle downtown. We met in drama club and your dad works at the hospital. Your parents are divorced. So are mine. My mom works as an insurance analyst. We’ve never had sex,” she took a deep breath but looked up at him at the last factoid to make sure he was paying attention and to emphasize with her eyes how serious she was.

His eyes were dark and defiant. His jaw muscle twitched and his beautiful full mouth was pressed into a harsh thin line. She wondered if he’d even heard anything she said. She continued on with her list doubtfully now and felt miffed. She understood that he wouldn’t be interested in any of this in the first place, she knew regular guys would look upon her with animosity at having to partake in such treachery, much less a demon from the pits of Hell. She never asked where he came from, she realized.

“Repeat it,” she demanded coolly just to see if he remembered nearly three pages of details that might be inconsequential. Some of it was certainly important and she knew her mother would ask. The other things were what Ruby imagined a boyfriend should know.

When the demon repeated her words, he copied her inflection, her feminine gestures and her voice. It was an eerie skill but she didn’t stop him. Instead, Ruby tried to school her face into calm resolve. When he was done repeating her words in her own voice, she smiled and said, “Good boy.” She could tell the condescending phrase irked him and her smile widened. Something thrilled inside of her at the thought of having power over him, of being able to treat him like a dog.

They planned to meet her mother the following Friday because that’s when dates typically happen. In the mean time, he tried to stay hidden but couldn’t seem to be more than one hundred feet from her. This strange bond was like a leash that kept him tethered to her. She could travel anywhere and any time and he had no choice but to follow her. Unable to do anything else, he followed her to school like a lamb, dressed in uniform should anyone see him, and trying to stay out of sight.

Eventually, Ruby was so caught up in school that she’d forgotten that the Demon lurked about her person. He was invisible but she could sometime smell a whiff of smoke and an underlying sweet rose bloom. She’d even forgotten about Dillon until Johnny wandered out of the lunchroom to sit outside, leaving her alone at the table they usually shared.

Dillon approached her table and it seemed to Ruby that the usual din of teenagers ebbed. Her ears rang with trouble as she glanced up just in time to see Dillon pick up her chocolate milk and tilt it over her head. She reacted quickly and shoved the milk at him so that it spilled down along the front of his shirt. The cafeteria erupted with laughter.

Humiliation and angry was evident on Dillon’s face. The crowd was supposed to be laughing with him, not at him. How quickly the loyalties of high school audiences turn, looking only for the next big prank. Dillon promised Ruby a lot of pain in the near future should they ever get any time alone. Ruby knew he was very capable of getting her alone to exact his revenge and could see the rage caged behind his stiff shoulders and spine.
