- Chapter 3 ~ He's Worse Than a Cyclops -
-------------------------------------------------------------
The moon shone luridly in the dark sky.
It glared down at her like a spotlight that stayed focused on her alone. Was she being watched?
A twig snapped nearby and a rush of fear swept through her.
Kalley picked up the pace, still hearing the string of swears and curses that soon faded behind her. Kalley shivered as a breeze passed by, and clutched her brown jacket tightly to her chest. She winced in discomfort, finally feeling the throbbing pain where the Cyclops had kicked her. The ends of her pants were torn and dirty; her jacket was covered in dust, small twigs, and soil.
She looked like a ragged, homeless child who was desperately running away from something.
Which she almost was.
Her shoulder, arms, and back screamed from the soreness of crashing into those trashcans. The streets were empty and silent.
Kalley was alone.
She almost wanted to stop and lean against the wall to think things through, but she knew she shouldn't do that. She couldn't.
Not a great time to hyperventilate here, She thought as she finally slowed to a walk.
That Cyclops . . . It was the first time in her life that she had ever seen one. Is this really planet Earth? Or did Earth really contain all these horrors that she finally knew about?
If she were forced to look on the bright side of things, she'd have to say that her bag was at least intact, none of her bones were broken, and she was almost home.
Home, eh?
At last, Kalley arrived at the front door of the apartment she lived in and sighed. There and back again . . .
Coming back here seemed a lot less intimidating than going back to confront the Cyclops again. It wouldn't even be dangerous if her uncle had been gone for the night. Who knows, maybe Pierce had fallen asleep.
As she entered, she closed the door as quietly as possible.
She entered the room without a sound - her breathing silent, the floorboards not creaking, and the her feet padding the ground with the most quiet of thuds.
The sudden sound of stomping started to come from the stairs. It was getting nearer.
Kalley fumbled for the cash in her bag, getting the crumpled up bill into her fingers..
I don't care anymore, She thought, exhausted. He can take all my money for all I care. This is nothing compared to what just happened today.
A bellow erupted from the base of the stairs. Kalley looked up - he stood just at the end of the hallway, shaking with anger.
"HOW. DARE. YOU!"
Well good evening to you too, Pig Head. Kalley thought bitterly. Had a nice sleep?
His shaggy hair looked messier than before - if that was even possible. Outraged, Pierce Miller stomped toward Kalley in a few steps and shook a wrinkled piece of paper violently in front of her face.
