Fable had been properly going to Tanzim's Academy for about three weeks, and she was having the time of her life.

Everything about magic was fascinating to her, and she was able to study every subject she wanted to. There were so many classes, and none of them were really mandatory unless you signed up for that course specifically. Dejy and Pendleton were both following a certain track, but they both studied whatever they wanted along with that track. Fable was popping in and out of classes at her leisure, and spending much of her spare time in the library.

One sunny day, however, she decided to head into town to get herself some snacks and possibly some more plants. Slight followed her through the market. They saw many different food stands and shops, but they didn't go into most of them.

Something caught Slight's eye, and he tugged on Fable's sleeve. He pointed to a cart of bao buns across the street. Fable wasn't sure how he had seen them considering how small he was. There was always the chance that he had smelled them, but he also had no nose, so the chance was very small.

Fable went to the merchant selling the bao and asked for three of them. He handed them to her wrapped in a small handkerchief. She pulled out one and gave it to Slight, saving the others for later. He gave it a confused look, unsure of how to eat it. Fable pulled out another for herself and bit into it to show him. He seemed to understand.

In an act that was both adorable and terrifying, Slight opened his mouth.

Under his eyes, a gap opened to revealed sharp white teeth and a long black forked tongue. He held the bao up to his mouth and used his tongue to pull it in. Once he swallowed the small dumpling, his mouth was gone, as if it had never existed. Fable was a bit terrified, but she had to admit that he looked very happy while eating it.
