Jim's performance was incredible, though I cringed every time he kissed her. I tried to ignore it as much as possible, but it was difficult, especially when their characters first met. Still, I congratulated them both.
(Time Change)
When I got home that night, the pain in my leg was unbearable. Dragging myself up the stairs, I made it into my bathroom.
The cold water from the shower ran over my gashes, stinging a bit. There were three of them all down my shin. I wasn't bleeding anymore, but the open wounds kept muscle tissue exposed. After carefully cleaning the injuries, I wrapped my leg in some medical tape that was stored in the cabinet. I limped to my bed and fell asleep, too exhausted to do anything else.(Time Change)
I returned to school, remembering Claire. She elbowed me in the hallway on our way to first period.
"Jim tells me you know," she said, "how much do you know?" I realized she was just curious, but her persistence was getting to me. Also the way she said Jim's name made me have to resist the urge to punch her.
"More than you," I grumbled.
"What was that?" She asked, a smile on her face. I faked a laugh and forced a smile as well.
"Probably a lot more than you do," I told her cheerfully. We headed into our geometry class, and unfortunately, she sat right next to me. It was impossible to get my work done with her incessant need for answers. It turns out I wasn't the only one who was annoyed.
"Miss Nuñez, if you're going to talk during the test, then I suggest you do it after school instead." Ms. Janeth remarked. She was subbing for the day. When we brought Claire to Trollmarket, she was ecstatic. Her fantasies seemed to take over as she ran amuck, unable to hear our warnings. She finally stopped at Vendel, awkwardly clapping as he finished his drink. While he dealt with the girl, I shot Jim an exhausted look in which he returned. We turned to face Claire, attempting to 'save' her from Vendel, but she did something that left us speechless.
She spoke Troll. The actual language. I could only make out some of her message, determining that my (other language) class was paying off.As Blinky, Aaarrrgghh, and Toby were off showing Claire the rest of Trollmarket, Jim took and I took a walk. His hand slipped into mine, lacing our fingers together. My limping worsened as the pain in my leg began to grow with each step.
"Woah," Jim caught me, wobbling a little, "did you get that from--"
"The changeling," I finished.
"Nomura?" He asked. I nodded.
So that's her name..
We stopped, admiring the view of the underground city. I felt Jim's arm slowly wrap around my waist. Looking up at his face, I studied every detail, and admitted to myself for the first time that I liked him. Bagdwella's awkward panting broke my trance.
"Spit it out, Bagdwella." I said impatiently.
"Your friends are about to be turned into pâté!" She yelled. Jim and I shot each other a look before running to the Hero's Forge. When we arrived in the room, the training equipment had began to go absolutely haywire. Claire hung tightly to a ledge, Toby struggling to do the same. Jim quickly made his way to the emergency off switch in the soothscryer, dropping the two others into Aaarrrgghh's grasp.
I saw a flash of light as the equipment lowered. Jim was gone.
"It's calling to him, at last.." Blinky said.
"Jim?" I asked, slightly panicking.
"No Jim," Aaarrrgghh replied. Toby shot me a worried look.
"What do you mean, 'no Jim?' There was definitely a Jim!" Claire practically yelled.
"He has been summoned." Blinky sighed.Blinkous filled us in on what was happening. Behind Tobias, Claire, and me, there was a blue glow. The three of is turned around to be greeted by Jim. He looked weak. Claire began to go off on another tangent, speaking about more imaginary things in which Blinky corrected.
"What did they say?" The four armed troll asked. Jim looked up at him.
"They said they won't stop us," he replied.
Stop us from what?
"What would my father stop you from?" Draal questioned, taking the words out of my mouth.
"From going into the darklands," the trollhunter answered, "but if we're going in, they said the only way we're getting out alive is if we kill Gunmar." I gasped, helping him up.
"You mean the GummGumm King, himself?" I asked. Jim nodded.
