They used to say that we'll want to be young
At a time we wanted to be old
But they never explained the in between
Not quite a child but not quite an adult
Like a child leaving a playground,
"Do I really have to go?"
But also eager to live a life,
Independent, exciting, and new
The life once led before
Must all be left behind
In one sudden swoop of time
We want to check out of childhood
And move out into the real world
But we secretly enjoyed the stay
There's no more choice
We don't get to go back
Is it all really over now?
Ah, what a coming of age story
The best ones are never published
But the best ones seem to cut deeper
That's where I am now
In the in between
I want to move on
But I still want to stay
If only there were time
To do both in a lifetime
Ah, but maybe there comes a time
Where we all need to give a tender wave
Goodbye.
