Who We Are

They told us we were different
That we were made wrong
They told us we were ugly
And that we didnt belong
They told us that our hair
Is nappy and untamable
They said, for us, true beauty
Would never be attainable
They stripped away our rights
And said we're not fully human
They rigged the system so our communities
Would easily fall to ruin

They took away so much
Including our history and where we came from
But I think that our time of listening
To all their lies is done

We know that we're unique
That every feature tells a story
We know that we stand strong
Under God's favor and His glory
We know each tendril of our hair
Is rhythmic like the tide
In all the different ways it's styled
Our hair's a crown of cultural pride
We know our melanin is poppin
And our ancestors were strong
As long as we hold on to their memory
Their legacy will never be gone

We must hold on to each other
To make our community strong again
And, this month and forever, be proud
That we are African American.
