HE TAKES A DEEP BREATH, BEFORE LOOKING YOU IN THE EYE.

"what's this?" you ask him, your fingers brushing against the woolly fabric.
"it's a blanket." he replies, almost sheepishly, before clearing his throat, "i didnae want ye getting cold tonight. it's to... to keep ye warm."
you wait a moment— focused on the fabric, on the gesture, rubbing your fingers against it as if to familiarise yourself with its texture— and then you smile, "thank you. that's very considerate of you, jamie."
he brightens at that, tilting his head, "ah it's nothing. just keeping ye warm."
"i appreciate it. but will you be cold without it?"
"na. don't worry about me, lass. i'll be fine as long as i know ye'r alright."
it's such a simple act but it feels like so much in the weight of its unspoken meaning; how he cares for you. with another warm smile, you take the blanket from his hand and watch the smile that glows against his cheeks when you tell him, "goodnight."
