An apprentice whose named Bare'paw lives in a feared clan known as Direclan. Living in a camp full of protective, fearless, strong, brave, and loyal cats. Though in her outside life of impressing the cats, her brother and friends stay by her side while she does the same. She is always aware of what danger might happen next. As Leaf-bare hits its peak in the forest, tragedy befalls DarkClan as they face both the forces of nature and the deadly rogues who live in the twolegplace nearby. When a horrific accident and a terrible loss spins the Clan into chaos, the cats must brace themselves for the darkest, most hopeless moons ahead. In the middle are the Clan's three apprentices: Palepaw, Scorchpaw, and Echopaw, who find themselves following the advice of their closest allies in a fight against war and a prophecy, as well as Clan and kin. While one runs from dark temptation, another carries a burden too heavy to imagine, and the third must fight against a legacy they never wanted.

Mistyfoot has once again gone missing. Reedwhisker has his suspicions that this wasn't just an accident, but Leopardstar refuses to hear a word of it. So Reedwhisker decides to take matters into his own paws, determined to gather enough evidence and find out what happened to his mother. He enlists the help of Mothwing, though he doesn't tell her who he suspects. . . Her own brother. Will he succeed or will he end up meeting the same fate as his mother?
