Hailey unwillingly accompanies her parents on a family vacation to New Orleans, right in the middle of a hot and humid summer. This is a trip she desperately wants to avoid. However, her attitude changes when, on a picnic stop to one of the many tours her mother planned for the family, she discovers an intriguing underground cellar. Upon investigating further, she finds this place contains a mysterious warning and the writings of another young woman, Clara, who settled in New Orleans decades before.

The story explores the parallel lives of these two teenagers, while they simultaneously unravel a dark secret that plagues the land. Each girl has the power to change a fate they did not choose and eventually find their true selves by following their hearts.
