After a strange encounter with a man who warns him of his future, twenty-four year-old James Walker finds himself in the crossfire between a group of soldiers and an ancient eldritch creature. Upon realising that James may be more than what initially meets the eye, the soldiers take him into custody. To vampires, he is what is called a Blackblood, something that is neither a human nor a vampire. Unlucky for him, Blackbloods are given the death penalty. James is horrified to have learned that he is no longer truly human.

As a way of earning his freedom, he is conscripted into the Capital Shock Regiment, a regiment with a ninety percent casualty rate designed for vampire criminals on death row. If he survives, he earns his freedom. Here, he slowly bonds with fellow inmate, Victoria Cross.

They both deal with their traumatic pasts but now, James must deal with an uncertain future where billions could die. The answer to all of it lies in the hands of a single mysterious figure that he desperately attempts to track down. With society on the brink of civil war in a world full of beings beyond our comprehension, the two engage in a plot that will change the fabric of the Universe.
